💡 Inspiration

EcoLoop was inspired by the growing problem of plastic waste entering urban environments and eventually affecting freshwater ecosystems. We wanted to create a platform that makes recycling easier and more engaging while encouraging citizens to actively participate in protecting their environment.

The idea is to connect plastic recycling with citizen participation, rewards, and environmental impact, creating a simple way for individuals to contribute to cleaner communities and healthier urban freshwater ecosystems.

♻️ What EcoLoop Does

EcoLoop is a smart reward-based recycling platform where citizens can:

Register and securely log in. Upload images of recyclable plastic bottles. Request doorstep pickup. Track their recycling requests. Earn EcoCredits after collector verification. Redeem EcoCredits through available rewards. View their recycling activity and environmental impact.

Authorized collectors can manage pickup requests, verify collected bottles, and update their status. The platform also provides a foundation for AI-assisted bottle identification, route optimization, community participation, and environmental analytics.

🛠️ How We Built It

We built EcoLoop using a full-stack architecture:

Frontend: React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS Backend: Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs Database: MySQL Authentication: JWT and BCrypt with role-based access AI: AI-service integration for bottle identification Containerization: Docker and Docker Compose CI/CD: GitHub Actions Cloud: Microsoft Azure Container Registry: Azure Container Registry Cloud Database: Azure Database for MySQL

The application follows separate workflows for citizens, collectors, and administrators, with backend authorization protecting role-specific operations.

📚 What We Learned

Building EcoLoop gave us hands-on experience in full-stack development, cloud deployment, DevOps, authentication, database management, Docker, CI/CD, and Azure services.

We also learned how to connect a technical solution with a real-world environmental problem and design a platform around citizen participation and measurable impact.

🚧 Challenges We Faced

Some of the major challenges included integrating the frontend, Spring Boot backend, and MySQL database; implementing secure role-based authentication; containerizing the application; configuring CI/CD pipelines; and deploying the application using Azure services.

Debugging networking, database connections, Docker containers, environment variables, and cloud configuration helped us understand how individual components work together in a real deployment environment.

Through these challenges, EcoLoop evolved from an initial idea into a working platform designed to encourage responsible recycling, citizen participation, and healthier urban freshwater ecosystems.
