We envision an approach to sustainability where it is incorporated into the daily lives of the people, and organisations have a major influence on opportunities to make this change. In this vein, our project "EcoLion" is a web-app focused on sustainability in the workplace. So far as our proof of concept, we have implemented carpooling, an efficient mode of transportation which reduces carbon emissions in our vehicle-reliant society. Our algorithm clusters co-workers from the same organisation based on the proximities of their residence and provides carpooling arrangements for travelling to and fro between homes and workplaces. This is easily visualised by the user through a geographical map on the website, and contact numbers of fellow carpoolers provided upon confirmed arrangements. Through EcoLion, sustainability is made accessible, viable and a common goal in working lives. To build the web-app, we used vue.js for our front-end, python for the back-end, and mysql for the database. For our clustering algorithm, we used dbScan, and Figma for our user interface design.
Through this project, we have learnt new coding skills through exposure to the various software used. In the bigger picture, we have also gained deeper understanding of how organisations play a central role in encouraging sustainable lifestyles. We must further the use of technology in this aspect to push for more innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint in the workplace.
In future, we can include a points system to reward and incentivise users to participate in carpooling sessions, calculated based on amount of carbon emissions saved. Points can be redeemed for rewards subject to the organisations' discretion and will also be displayed on a leaderboard in the web-app to compare individual users and organisations to promote higher participation in sustainable practices. To scale up our web-app, we could include also a tab where organisations can host sustainable events or encourage co-workers to attend such events together (e.g. beach clean-ups), which would make fuller use of the organisation's potential role in this cause. Our greatest challenge in this event was insufficient time to implement the points system and scaling-up of our web-app which we originally hoped to do. Nevertheless, we are confident that the concept or our project and its future potential are promising and contribute to promoting sustainability in the workplace.
