Often in my student life whenever i buy something i just stare at the wrapper or bottle of the product and think if the product is bio-degradable or not will this harm the nature ?? So, i thought of making something that can help users identify whether the product they are consuming are eco friendly or not and then our app EcoLens came

What EcoLens Does

EcoLens is an AI-powered platform that helps users make sustainable choices:

  • Eco-Fraud Detection – Uses AI and fingerprint scanning to analyze product labels and spot fake sustainability claims.
  • Environmental Insights – Provides real-time alerts on air quality, water safety, and other environmental conditions.
  • Personalized Tips – Suggests eco-friendly habits and health-conscious choices based on product usage.

How We Built It

We combined multiple technologies to bring EcoLens to life:

  • Frontend – Built with React and Tailwind CSS for a smooth and modern user experience.
  • Backend – Developed using Node.js and Firebase to store user data and process product verifications.
  • Product Data & Eco-Fraud Detection – Integrated Open Food Facts API to fetch product details and validate eco-certifications.
  • Fingerprint-Based Authentication – Used fingerprint scanning to verify product authenticity and detect fraudulent eco-labels.
  • Twilio Integration – Implemented Twilio for real-time notifications and SMS alerts on fraudulent products.
  • Authentication – Secure login and profile management handled by Firebase/Supabase.

Challenges We Faced

  • Fingerprint Data Processing – Learning to implement fingerprint scanning for product authentication.
  • Twilio Integration for the First Time – Understanding how to send real-time alerts via Twilio and integrating it into the backend.

What We’re Proud Of

  • Implementing fingerprint-based product verification to detect false sustainability claims.
  • Successfully integrating Twilio for real-time fraud alerts.
  • Learning backend development to power authentication and API connections.

What We Learned

  • Backend Development Fundamentals – Learned how to build and manage a backend for handling user data and API requests.
  • API Handling – Gained experience working with multiple APIs and ensuring smooth data flow.

What’s Next for EcoLens

  • Partnering with Eco-Certification Authorities – Collaborating with official organizations to verify product claims.
  • Launching a Mobile App – Expanding to Android and iOS for better accessibility.
  • Expanding the Product Database – Adding more product categories to enhance fraud detection.
  • AI-Powered Analysis – Enhancing fraud detection with machine learning models to identify patterns in fake eco-labels.
