Inspiration
As digital usage continues to increase, the environmental impact of online activity often goes unnoticed. While sustainability conversations usually focus on physical resources, the energy and emissions associated with digital platforms are rarely visible. This inspired the idea behind EcoLens AI: to make digital sustainability understandable and actionable for everyday users.
What it does
EcoLens AI analyzes the sustainability impact of any website URL and presents the results instantly. It generates an EcoScore, estimates digital energy usage, highlights potential sustainability risks, and provides personalized recommendations to reduce environmental impact. The platform also allows users to explore different usage scenarios and view how individual actions can scale into larger environmental benefits.
How we built it
The project was designed as an interactive, single-page system that delivers instant results using logical assumptions and behavior-based analysis. Websites are categorized based on common digital usage patterns, and their estimated environmental impact is presented through clear visual elements, scenario exploration, and future impact views. The focus was on clarity, explainability, and performance.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was balancing meaningful sustainability insights with fast performance. Attempting to rely on real-time website data caused delays and complexity, which led to a redesign focused on transparent, rule-based logic. Another challenge was simplifying complex sustainability concepts into an intuitive and engaging user experience without overwhelming users.
