ecoin, is dedicated to building a stronger community by gathering passionate climate enthusiasts as well as through actively encouraging the public to combat climate change and climate anxiety.

Inspiration

Our inspiration was Air Miles, a rewards system for flying. We wanted to incorporate a points system to encourage more participation in helping fight climate change.

What it does

Goal: To actively encourage more participation in solving the climate crisis. The platform is a space for customers and companies to get rewarded through points when they make an effective “green transaction.” This can be anything from the customer purchasing a sustainable green product from let's say the Kitchener Market to being involved directly by donating clothes to H&M that will be recycled.

How we built it

The backend was built using Flask, SQLAlchemy and SQLite. While for the frontend HTML, CSS, Tailwind, HyperUI, and JS were used to build the project.

Challenges we ran into

• Building the login/authentication system

• Mobile page responsiveness

• Layout of HTML elements

• Database connection

• Building an admin panel with flask to populate the database

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Creating a user friendly interface

• Ease of use

• Research completed on companies in Kitchener to identify the target market

What we learned

We learned how to implement Flask Authentication and perform CRUD operations with Flask using a SQLite database. We learned how to use Tailwind CSS, specifically the different classes used to organize and make HTML elements more beautiful.

What's next for Ecoin

A page where Ecoin suggests user purchase options of specific items dependent on their likings through a “Getting to know you” page. If you like buying clothes, it will suggest you to buy clothes from stores that are made from Organic Cotton or Polyester like H&M. By doing so it will help increase the amount of customers in each store.

Suggesting to users the alternatives of fossil fuels like using the bike, or walking, instead of car/bus.

If our product/capacity-building initiative skyrockets in customer interest, we will have adequate financial capital from recurring subscriptions from users who are committed in order plan to partner with organizations like Eco-Excellence Awards who award recognition to companies, or organizations who excel in environmental practices and sustainability

We hope to partner with numerous companies in the future in order to expand Ecoin.
