Inspiration
The inspiration for EcoHunt AI came from observing a fundamental disconnect in environmental action: people see pollution everywhere but lack effective ways to report and address it. Traditional cleanup efforts are fragmented, government responses are slow, and individual actions feel insignificant. We wondered: what if we could combine the addictive engagement of mobile gaming with real environmental impact?
Drawing from Pokemon GO's success in getting millions of people outdoors and active, we envisioned a platform that would make environmental stewardship as compelling as collecting virtual creatures. The key insight was that people are already carrying powerful environmental monitoring tools in their pockets - smartphones with cameras, GPS, and internet connectivity.
EcoHunt connects to the "Connected Worlds" theme by bringing people together to clean up their shared environment, whether it's a small neighbourhood house backyard or an entire city. Our platform creates connections between neighbors, friends, and community members who team up in cleanup groups to tackle pollution together. People can start small by cleaning their local area and earn points, or join larger city-wide efforts where everyone works toward the same environmental goals. We turn solo actions into community movements that create real positive change for our connected world.
What it does
EcoHunt gamifies the cleanup process to engage communities in real-world pollution reduction. Users discover pollution areas on an interactive map, claim cleanup tasks, and use AI-powered photo analysis to document their environmental impact.
Core Features:
- Interactive Map: Color-coded markers show cleanup opportunities by severity (red=high, yellow=medium, green=easy)
- AI-Powered Analysis: Smartphones analyze photos to assess cleanup quality, identify waste types, and generate safety instructions
- Community Collaboration: Join cleanup groups, coordinate efforts, and work together on larger environmental challenges
- Gamified Experience: Earn points, unlock achievements, and climb leaderboards while making measurable environmental impact
- Real-Time Tracking: Instant updates when areas are reported, claimed, or completed across all users
- Mobile-First Design: Optimized for outdoor use with camera integration, GPS tracking, and offline functionality
How we built it
EcoHunt AI was built as a modern Progressive Web App using cutting-edge web technologies optimized for mobile environmental work:
Frontend Stack:
- Next.js 14 with App Router for server-side rendering and automatic performance optimizations
- React 18 with TypeScript for type-safe, component-based development
- Tailwind CSS for responsive, utility-first styling
- Zustand for lightweight, reactive state management
Backend & Infrastructure:
- Supabase providing PostgreSQL database with real-time subscriptions, authentication, and Row Level Security
- PostGIS spatial extensions for efficient location-based queries and geographic data
- OpenRouter API for multi-model AI access including GPT-4 Vision for image analysis
Challenges we ran into
AI Speed vs Accuracy Trade-off: Users expect instant feedback, but accurate AI analysis requires processing time. We implemented progressive enhancement where basic functionality works immediately, with enhanced AI features loading asynchronously.
Spatial Data Complexity: Working with GPS coordinates, map projections, and spatial queries introduced unexpected mathematical challenges. Converting between coordinate systems and calculating distances efficiently required learning geospatial concepts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Real-Time Collaborative Mapping: Instant updates across devices when users report or complete cleanups, enabling true community coordination.
What we learned
Mobile-First Design is Essential: Most environmental work happens outdoors with smartphones. Touch-optimized interfaces, offline functionality, and battery-efficient features are not optional - they're requirements for real-world impact.
