Inspiration
EcoGlow was inspired by the growing problem of plastic waste and poor visibility on roads at night. We wanted to create an eco-friendly solution that reduces plastic pollution while improving road safety. This led us to the idea of making glow-in-the-dark tiles using recycled plastic waste.
What it does
EcoGlow converts plastic waste into durable glow tiles. These tiles absorb sunlight during the day and glow at night without electricity. They can be used on footpaths, parks, gardens, school campuses, cycle tracks, and public spaces to improve safety and save energy.
How we built it
We collected and cleaned plastic waste, then shredded it into small pieces. The shredded plastic was mixed with glow powder and binding materials. The mixture was heated and molded into tile shapes. After cooling and testing, the tiles were checked for strength, durability, and glow performance.
Challenges we ran into
- Finding the right ratio of plastic and glow material.
- Making the tiles strong enough for outdoor use.
- Ensuring the glow lasted for a long time at night.
- Managing the heating and molding process safely.
- Reducing production costs while maintaining quality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully transformed waste plastic into useful tiles.
- Created a product that works without electricity.
- Combined environmental protection with road safety.
- Developed a low-cost and sustainable prototype.
- Increased awareness about recycling and renewable solutions.
What we learned
Through EcoGlow, we learned about plastic recycling, material science, sustainable design, and product development. We also improved our problem-solving, teamwork, research, and presentation skills while creating and testing the project.
What's next for EcoGlow
- Improve tile strength and glow duration.
- Use AI to optimize material mixtures and production.
- Test the tiles in real-world outdoor environments.
- Partner with schools, parks, and local communities.
- Scale production to recycle more plastic waste and create a larger environmental impact.
