Inspiration We were inspired by the gap between knowing about climate change and feeling motivated to take daily action. We wanted to transform the often guilt-driven task of reducing one's carbon footprint into a positive, fun, and social experience. Our goal was to make sustainability feel like a game you can win with your friends.

What it does EcoFoot is a mobile app that turns eco-friendly living into a competitive game. Users log daily activities like recycling or taking the bus to earn points, unlock achievements, and climb leaderboards. By competing with friends, users stay motivated to make greener choices and see their positive environmental impact grow over time.

How we built it We built a fast and responsive frontend using React and Vite, styled with Tailwind CSS for a clean look. The app's navigation is handled by React Router. For the backend, we leveraged Firebase for user authentication and Firestore to store all user data, activities, and leaderboard scores in real-time.

Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was designing a fair and engaging points system that accurately reflected the carbon impact of different activities. We also had to ensure the Firestore database structure was efficient for real-time leaderboard updates and social features without becoming too complex or costly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We're most proud of creating an app that is both fun and meaningful. Successfully integrating the gamification elements—like streaks, achievements, and live leaderboards—into a smooth user experience was a huge win. We built a product that truly makes a dry topic like carbon tracking feel exciting.

What we learned We learned a great deal about designing for user engagement and how game mechanics can drive real-world behavior. Technically, we deepened our knowledge of structuring NoSQL databases in Firestore for complex features like social networks and real-time rankings. The project was a great lesson in balancing simplicity with powerful features.

What's next for EcoFoot Our next steps are to introduce personalized challenges, add features like streak for everyday log activity, provide achievement badges and community goals to foster teamwork. We also plan to add more detailed carbon savings analytics and explore partnerships with environmental organizations, allowing users to convert their earned points into real-world impact, like planting trees.
