Inspiration

Human–wildlife conflict is a daily challenge for forest-edge communities. Villagers, farmers, and night-shift workers often rely on unsafe methods like fire, crackers, or makeshift tools to scare away intruding animals. These methods cause accidents, forest fires, and environmental damage. Our inspiration was simple: create a safe, fireless, eco-friendly device that protects people without harming wildlife—a modern solution rooted in both technology and compassion.

What it does

EcoFlare Defender is a handheld smart torch that safely deters wild animals using: • Intense red LED flashes • Artificial flame visuals (no real fire) • Non-harmful sound patterns animals naturally avoid It activates instantly during emergencies, offering villagers and farmers an easy, portable, and ethical way to stay safe at night—without smoke, fire, or explosives.

How we built it

We designed EcoFlare Defender as a rechargeable, weather-resistant torch using: • High-intensity red LEDs • Flame-simulation modules • Safe acoustic sound emitters • Lightweight rechargeable power system Our focus was on portability, affordability, and environmental responsibility, ensuring even remote communities can use it like a first-aid kit or safety flashlight.

Challenges we ran into

• Replicating the effectiveness of fire and crackers without actual fire, smoke, or explosives • Ensuring the deterrent signals work for multiple species and in different climates • Making the device strong, portable, and affordable • Balancing safety for humans while ensuring zero harm to animals

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Creating a fireless, eco-safe device that reduces human–wildlife conflict • Making the solution portable and reusable, unlike crackers or burning materials • Testing light and sound patterns that are effective yet within animal-safe limits • Designing a device that supports UN SDGs: Health, Climate Action & Life on Land

What we learned

We learned that real innovation means protecting both people and nature. Understanding animal behavior, speaking with villagers, and refining the device through feedback helped us create a more reliable and community-friendly solution. We also learned how responsible engineering can prevent forest fires and protect biodiversity.

What's next for EcoFlare Defender – Smart Torch to Repel Wild Animals

The next version will evolve into a smart AI-IoT wildlife safety system: • Motion-detection sensors to detect animals automatically • Camera-based alerts sent to villagers’ phones • Louder deterrent horns and wider light-coverage • A mobile app + blockchain-based incident log to help forest officials monitor wildlife movement • A connected Village Safety Network linking multiple devices for collective protection EcoFlare Defender aims to become a standard safety tool—just like fire extinguishers—ensuring peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife.
