Inspiration

EcoEngage is inspired by the urgent need for energy conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The project aligns with Georgetown University's commitment to sustainability, as exemplified by its President, John J. DeGioia's pledge to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2020, a goal that was surpassed by achieving over 71% reduction from a 2006 baseline.

What it does

EcoEngage is a transformative digital platform that revolutionizes energy conservation within the Georgetown University community. Its primary function is to incentivize sustainable energy usage among students, particularly in dormitories. By integrating advanced metering infrastructure to monitor real-time energy consumption, EcoEngage provides students with detailed feedback on their energy use, alongside actionable suggestions for reduction. The platform incorporates an element of gamification; students earn energy points based on their energy savings relative to a set threshold and their dorm's average. These points can be redeemed for university flex dollars and contribute to competition for an "Energy Scholarship". Thus, EcoEngage not only promotes energy efficiency but also engages students in a meaningful challenge to reduce their carbon footprint, making energy conservation a fun, interactive, and rewarding experience. This approach aligns with broader environmental goals and fosters a culture of sustainability within the university.

How we built it

EcoEngage was a sophisticated process that integrated state-of-the-art technology with innovative software development. At its foundation, we installed specialized electric meters in each dorm unit, equipped with Wi-Fi chips to facilitate the real-time transmission of electricity consumption data to a cloud-based system. This system allowed for meticulous tracking and analysis of energy usage. In parallel, we developed a user-friendly application, leveraging the expertise of Georgetown University's Computer Science department. This collaboration was crucial in designing an app that was not only intuitive but also equipped with features to visualize energy consumption data in an accessible format. The app's interface included charts and graphs, making it easier for users to understand their energy usage patterns. Additionally, the backend of the app was engineered to process the data effectively, providing users with personalized reports and recommendations for reducing energy consumption. This harmonious blend of hardware installation, software development, and collaborative efforts resulted in the successful creation of EcoEngage, a comprehensive tool for promoting energy conservation within the university community.

Challenges we ran into

One of the significant challenges we faced during the development of EcoEngage was the lack of precise data regarding dormitory energy usage at Georgetown University. To address this, we turned to available data from external sources, specifically the U.S. News & World Report, which provided information on undergraduate student housing. However, this data only accounted for undergraduate students and did not necessarily reflect the complete picture of dorm energy usage, as it excluded other resident populations and variables within the university. This limitation meant that our calculations and projections were based on partial data, posing a challenge in accurately estimating total energy consumption and potential savings across all dormitories. Despite this, we strived to make the most informed and accurate estimates possible under these constraints, demonstrating our adaptability and commitment to the project's success.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

EcoEngage stands as a beacon of innovation and environmental stewardship, having achieved remarkable successes in promoting energy conservation at Georgetown University. This pioneering project has effectively identified and mitigated energy wastage in dormitories, leading to substantial energy savings of around 1,511,693 kWh per academic year. At its core, EcoEngage creatively merges technology and sustainability through a comprehensive digital platform that leverages data analytics and gamification, actively engaging students in energy-saving practices. This initiative has not only fostered a culture of sustainability within the university but also realized significant financial savings, estimated at $192,000 annually, which can be reinvested for productive purposes including furthering the EcoEngage program. Beyond its immediate impact, the project empowers students with a deeper understanding of their role in combating global warming and offers tangible incentives, like the “Energy Scholarship”, for significant contributions to energy conservation. EcoEngage's model sets a precedent for universities globally, demonstrating the potent combination of student engagement, technology, and sustainability in addressing pressing environmental issues.

What we learned

While developing and implementing the EcoEngage project, we garnered invaluable insights and lessons. We learned about the complexities of accurately measuring and managing energy consumption in a university setting, particularly when direct access to comprehensive data is limited. The project underscored the importance of innovative problem-solving, as we navigated challenges like estimating energy usage from partial data sources. We gained a deeper understanding of user engagement strategies, discovering that integrating gamification and tangible incentives like scholarships can significantly boost participation in sustainability initiatives. The technical aspects of the project, including the integration of real-time data transmission with user-friendly app interfaces, provided us with practical experience in creating effective technology solutions for environmental issues. Furthermore, we learned about the potential and importance of scalability in sustainability projects, recognizing that solutions effective in one context could be adapted for broader applications. This project has been an enlightening experience in blending technology, environmental stewardship, and community engagement to drive meaningful change.

What's next for EcoEngage

The future of EcoEngage looks promising and expansive. Building on our current success, the next steps involve scaling up the project to reach beyond Georgetown University. We aim to adapt and implement EcoEngage in other educational institutions, harnessing its potential to make a broader impact on national energy conservation efforts. This expansion will involve refining the platform based on feedback and technological advancements, ensuring its applicability and effectiveness in diverse settings. Additionally, we plan to enhance the gamification elements and incentives to further boost student engagement and participation. Continuous improvement in data analytics and energy monitoring techniques will also be a focus, aiming to provide even more precise and actionable insights for users. In the long term, EcoEngage aspires to be a leading model in university-level sustainability initiatives, contributing significantly to global efforts in combating climate change and promoting environmental responsibility.
