Inspiration

The idea for EcoEcho was born from a deep love for farming, green spaces, and a clean environment. I’ve always found peace under the shade of a tree, with the wind brushing my face—a moment that reminds me how vital nature is to our well-being. But seeing people dump waste carelessly or ignore simple habits like folding a candy wrapper until they find a bin made me realize we need a shift in mindset. This project was born from a desire to make environmental care a shared responsibility. I wanted to create a space where people could learn, act, and inspire each other—whether they’re in the city or deep in rural communities. If one person plants a tree or reclaims land, others might follow. That ripple effect is what EcoEcho is all about.

What it does

EcoEcho is a web platform that empowers users to: Share photos or videos of their environmental actions (e.g., planting trees, managing waste, conserving energy). Learn about topics like land reclamation, indigenous trees, herbal plants, and e-waste. Earn virtual points and badges for contributing to environmental care. Explore a community feed where actions inspire others to replicate or adapt ideas. Build a “green graph” that showcases their consistency and impact—like GitHub, but for eco-activism.

How we built it

We used the following tech stack: Frontend: React Backend: Node.js with Express Database: MongoDB AI Integration: NLP to summarize posts and generate eco-tips Image recognition to tag tree types or waste categories Hosting: Vercel We focused on accessibility, simplicity, and community-driven design. The platform is built to be inclusive for both urban and rural users.

Challenges we ran into

Designing a badge system that feels meaningful without monetary rewards Ensuring the platform works well for users with limited internet access Creating a feed that encourages replication of ideas without feeling competitive Balancing education and gamification so users stay engaged and informed

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a platform that blends environmental education with social motivation Designing a system where users can earn recognition for real-world impact Building a space that connects diverse communities around a shared goal Staying true to the vision of simplicity, accessibility, and collective responsibility

What we learned

Tech can be a powerful tool for environmental change when paired with community and storytelling Gamification works best when it’s meaningful—badges and points can motivate without needing cash rewards People are more likely to act when they see others doing the same—visibility drives impact Designing for inclusivity means thinking beyond features—it’s about who feels seen and heard

What's next for EcoEcho

Add location-based features to show green actions happening nearby Expand the knowledge base with community-contributed eco-tips Introduce seasonal challenges (e.g., “Plant a Tree Month”) to boost engagement Partner with local organizations to promote tree planting and waste management campaigns Explore offline access for users in low-connectivity areas
