Inspiration
Walking through our school campus and local parks, we noticed a recurring problem: plastic bottles and wrappers were everywhere, despite recycling bins being available. We realized that students want to help the environment, but lack immediate motivation. Recycling often feels like a chore with no visible reward. We asked ourselves: What if recycling felt like playing a game? That question sparked EcoEarn.
What it does
EcoEarn is a gamified sustainability platform that turns plastic waste into tangible rewards.
- Scan & Verify: Students scan a QR code on designated smart-bins or upload a photo of their recycled items.
- Earn Points: The system verifies the action and awards "EcoPoints."
- Redeem Rewards: Points can be exchanged for discounts at local partner cafes, stationery stores, or even donated to wildlife conservation NGOs (like WWF).
How we built it
We designed EcoEarn with a user-first approach:
- Frontend: We used Figma to prototype a clean, student-friendly mobile interface.
- Logic: We mapped out the user journey using Notion to ensure the point system was fair and engaging.
- Verification Concept: We explored using Python and basic image recognition concepts to verify plastic types, ensuring the system isn't abused.
- Partnership Model: We drafted a proposal for local businesses to join the rewards network, creating a circular economy within our community.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was trust and verification. How do we ensure people are actually recycling and not just scanning codes? We solved this by designing a "Community Verification" model where random audits and peer-reporting keep the system honest. Another challenge was finding initial partners; we had to pitch the value proposition to local shop owners clearly to get them on board.
What we learned
We learned that behavior change requires incentives. Pure altruism isn't always enough for mass adoption. By adding a layer of gamification (points, leaderboards, badges), we can make sustainability addictive in a good way. We also learned how to pitch a social enterprise model that benefits students, businesses, and the planet simultaneously.
What's next for EcoEarn
- Launch a pilot program in our high school cafeteria.
- Partner with 5 local businesses for the first reward catalog.
- Integrate an AI-based image classifier to automatically identify plastic types from user uploads.
- Expand to other schools in the district!
