Inspiration
EcoDrop was inspired by a simple problem: most people want to recycle, but the process is inconvenient. People often do not have time to go to recycling points, forget to recycle, or feel that the reward is not worth the effort.
We wanted to remove that friction completely and create a modern recycling experience inspired by apps like Uber, Duolingo, and Strava. Our goal was to make recycling easy, rewarding, social, and engaging.
What it does
EcoDrop is a mobile application that allows users to scan recyclable items, store them in a digital inventory, and request on-demand recyclable pickups directly from home.
The app includes:
- AI-powered recyclable scanning
- Inventory management
- Recycler pickup requests
- Real-time tracking
- Wallet and rewards system
- Gamification and social systems (currently mocked)
EcoDrop transforms recycling into a convenient and interactive experience.
How we built it
We built the mobile application using:
- React Native
- TypeScript
The backend was developed using:
- Java
- Spring Boot
- Spring Data JPA
We also integrated:
- OpenAI API for recyclable scanning intelligence
- Google Maps API for location and tracking features
The project was structured with a mobile frontend connected to a REST API backend.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing a user experience that feels smooth and modern while handling multiple systems like inventory management, pickup flow, AI scanning, and tracking.
Another challenge was creating a scalable concept for gamification and social interaction that could keep users engaged long-term instead of using the app only occasionally.
We also had to balance realistic functionality with hackathon time constraints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a complete and modern concept that combines:
- sustainability
- convenience
- AI
- gamification
- social interaction
We successfully implemented core features such as:
- recyclable scanning
- inventory management
- pickup requests
- wallet system
- Recycler flow
We are also proud of building a strong product vision with a polished user experience and scalable future potential.
What we learned
Through building EcoDrop, we learned how important user experience and motivation are in sustainability-focused applications.
We also improved our skills in:
- mobile development with React Native
- backend architecture with Spring Boot
- API integration
- application design
- product thinking
Most importantly, we learned that environmental solutions become much more effective when they are convenient and rewarding for users.
What's next for EcoDrop
Our next steps include:
- implementing real-time Recycler tracking
- completing the gamification system
- adding social leaderboards and challenges
- improving AI recyclable detection
- adding rewards and brand partnerships
- deploying the platform publicly
In the future, we want EcoDrop to become a complete smart recycling ecosystem for cities, universities, businesses, and communities.
