Inspiration
The Pokémon franchise and the Pokedex concept inspired us to create an app that would encourage users to explore and appreciate the unique flora in Los Angeles while promoting environmental awareness and addressing a data gap in the field of ecology.
What it does
Ecodex is a gamified app that allows users to discover, identify, and catalog endemic and associated plant species in the Los Angeles area. By engaging users with nature, it fosters an appreciation for the environment, indirectly influencing them to make more sustainable choices and adopt eco-friendly behaviors (Clayton 2003). Additionally, Ecodex addresses the need for reliable field data in ecology, contributing valuable information to scientific research (Pimm 2018).
Benefits and Problem Solving
Ecodex serves two primary purposes: promoting environmental awareness among users and providing much-needed field data for ecological research. By capturing users' interest in nature, the app helps create a mindset that values sustainability and environmental protection (Clayton 2003). In turn, this mindset encourages users to make choices that positively impact the environment.
Furthermore, Ecodex addresses a significant data gap in ecology. Scientists often require accurate field data on plant locations, particularly for endemic species, to conduct biodiversity research and conservation planning (Pimm 2018). Ecodex empowers users to contribute to this research by providing geo-tagged plant data through the app, making it an invaluable tool for researchers.
Future Developments
To enhance the benefits and problem-solving capabilities of Ecodex, future developments will focus on expanding the database to cover more plant species and regions, incorporating social features for users to connect with fellow plant enthusiasts, and exploring partnerships with research institutions and environmental organizations. This will maximize the app's impact on users' environmental awareness and its contribution to scientific research.
