INSPIRATION
"People want to live sustainably but lack tools that make eco-friendly choices rewarding and engaging"
We identified a significant gap between environmental consciousness and daily action. While urban populations express strong interest in sustainability, existing mobility solutions focus primarily on fitness metrics rather than environmental impact.
Our inspiration stemmed from:
- Urban transportation emissions remaining high despite the potential of cycling adoption.
- The lack of motivational tools that connect individual actions to measurable environmental impact
- Untapped partnership opportunities between local businesses and eco-conscious consumers.
- Growing corporate demand for measurable ESG reporting and employee engagement
WHAT IT DOES
EcoCycle transforms sustainable biking into a comprehensive ecosystem that delivers value to multiple stakeholders:
Core Platform Functionality:
- QR Code bike access system for seamless bike unlocking and tracking
- Survey-based ride access providing free 30-minute rides in exchange for user insights
- Real-time carbon savings calculations using EPA environmental standards
- Gamified rewards system with points redeemable at partner establishments
- Community impact dashboards showing collective environmental savings
- Workplace integration for corporate sustainability challenges and CSR reporting
Unique Value Propositions:
- Clear value chain: "Bike, save carbon, earn rewards"
- Barrier-free access through survey-based payment alternatives
- Multi-stakeholder ecosystem serving cyclists, businesses, employers, and municipalities
- Tangible environmental impact conversion from individual rides
HOW WE BUILT IT
We built EcoCycle using a modern tech stack focused on creating a functional prototype. The frontend uses React with TypeScript, Vite for fast builds, and Tailwind CSS for responsive design.
For route planning and mapping, we integrated the OpenRouteService API to provide bike route planning and navigation services. This API delivers eco-friendly routing that aligns with our sustainability goals, calculating optimal bike routes with accurate distance metrics.
The carbon calculation engine implements EPA standards for precise emissions tracking. We used Radix UI for accessible components and Lucide for clean icons.
Our development approach focused on creating a demo-ready prototype with simulated ride tracking, while building the foundation for real GPS integration in future iterations.
CHALLENGES WE RAN INTO
Technical Integration: Balancing simulated functionality with real API integrations to create a believable user experience within time constraints.
Partnership Coordination: Developing a value proposition that appealed to diverse business types while maintaining a cohesive ecosystem strategy.
Economic Sustainability: Balancing point values, redemption costs, and partnership fees to create a financially viable model.
WHAT WE LEARNED
We built a working prototype by focusing on core functionality that demonstrates our value proposition. The hackathon environment taught us to prioritize demo-ready features over technical perfection. We discovered that clear user experience and tangible environmental impact metrics resonate more strongly than complex feature lists.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR ECOCYCLE
