Inspiration

SDG Earthlab was inspired by the urgent need to bridge environmental education with practical action. With SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) as focal points, EcoConnect harnesses NASA Earth data to help students and communities understand their impact on the planet, empowering them to actively contribute to sustainable solutions.

What it does

SDG Earthlab is an interactive app that uses real-time NASA Earth observation data to bring SDGs into classrooms and communities. Through gamified modules like “Map My Impact” and “Climate Choices,” users engage with real-world challenges related to pollution, soil health, and climate patterns, promoting awareness, collaboration, and actionable learning.

How we built it

SDG Earthlab was developed using Glide, a no-code platform, allowing for easy integration of data visualizations, user-friendly navigation, and seamless NASA data access. We used Google Sheets for data storage and Airtable plugins for streamlined data visualization, creating a rich and interactive user experience.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating live NASA Earth data posed initial technical challenges in ensuring data updates were smoothly represented within the no-code app framework. We also encountered the challenge of balancing data complexity with accessibility to keep the app engaging for users of all skill levels.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of making high-quality environmental data accessible to young learners and non-experts in an intuitive, hands-on way. Seeing students and community members engaged in tracking environmental metrics and brainstorming solutions to local problems has been incredibly rewarding.

What we learned

Building SDG Earthlab highlighted the importance of making environmental data relatable and relevant for users. We learned effective ways to simplify complex data and integrate real-world issues into classroom learning through SDG-based challenges.

What's next for SDG Earthlab

Our next steps include expanding SDG Earthlab modules to cover additional SDGs, improving community collaboration features, and enabling users to track personal and collective environmental contributions over time. We also aim to partner with more educational institutions to incorporate SDG Earthlab into broader curriculums, fostering a generation of environmentally-conscious global citizens.
