Inspiration
Climate change has become an increasingly pressing concern, with 87% of the world’s population expressing anxiety over it, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. So, when faced with such a significant issue, the best way to alleviate worry is through action. However, many people are unsure where to begin when it comes to contributing to the fight against climate change. This inspired me to create EcoConnect—a platform designed to empower individuals by providing them with actionable ways to make a difference.
What it does
EcoConnect connects climate enthusiasts and those feeling anxious about climate change with a wide range of environmental organizations. Through the platform, users can discover events to attend, learn more about various environmental organizations, and join a community of like-minded individuals who are committed to changing the course of climate change.
How we built it
The project began with designing the user interface in Figma. Once the design was finalized, I tried coding it on Replit.
Challenges we ran into
This was my first time using Figma, which presented a steep learning curve as I was starting from scratch. Adapting to the platform took considerable time, especially under tight deadlines. Additionally, I encountered technical issues with VS Code on my computer, which led me to switch to Replit for coding. Given that I was also new to CSS and JavaScript, and working alone without a team, it was challenging to complete the website within the limited timeframe.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Throughout this hackathon, I took on various roles (I was a solo hacker), including designing, coding, and researching the idea. I’m particularly proud of how the design turned out, especially considering the time constraints and the fact that it was my first attempt at building a website.
What we learned
Starting out with Figma was initially slow and challenging, but as I became more familiar with the tool, my efficiency improved. This experience taught me the importance of practice and perseverance in mastering new tools. Additionally, I learned that participating in a hackathon alone can be quite stressful, and having a team can alleviate some of the pressure and provide valuable support.
What's next for EcoConnect
The future of EcoConnect involves expanding its reach by hosting events in partnership with other climate organizations. This will help the platform grow, reach a wider audience, and establish itself as a household name in the fight against climate change.
