Inspiration
As a teenager, I came to the realization that a significant portion of our time is spent mindlessly scrolling through social media platforms, often neglecting important topics such as sustainability that surround us. As members of the future generation, it is crucial for us to be mindful and proactive in taking care of the Earth. However, I personally felt constrained and unsure about how to initiate my involvement in sustainability-related events or activities that would allow me to actively brainstorm and generate ideas. It was this situation that led me to establish EcoConnect.
What it does
EcoConnect is a platform that aims to bridge the gap between individuals who are passionate about sustainability and various opportunities for engagement. It serves as a hub where like-minded individuals can come together, share ideas, collaborate on projects, and participate in events focused on sustainable practices. By creating a space for individuals to connect and exchange knowledge, EcoConnect fosters an environment conducive to generating innovative solutions for environmental challenges. Our platform provides users with everything they need to be eco-friendly, from finding sustainable products and transportation, to connecting with like-minded individuals and communities. Furthermore, EcoConnect facilitates networking opportunities by connecting users with non-profit organizations that prioritize sustainability. This enables individuals to explore potential career paths, internships, or volunteer opportunities in the field of sustainability. By fostering these connections, EcoConnect aims to create a network of passionate individuals who can collectively drive positive change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
How we built it
EcoConnect utilizes a no code platform, with the initial layout and design being created on WIX. The decision to use this easy-to-use platform was made in order to quickly establish the basic structure of EcoConnect. Subsequently, additional elements were incorporated into the platform.
Challenges we ran into
As a first-time participant in a hackathon, particularly as someone without coding experience, my primary objective was to promote and utilize no code platforms. With this in mind, I opted to explore Bubble, a platform that allows users to create applications without writing code. I began by defining data types and designing the initial layout for EcoConnect. However, with the time crunch, I encountered difficulties due to my lack of familiarity with Bubble's features. The platform appeared to be quite advanced for my current skill level. I decided to give another no code platform called WIX a try. Initially, I faced some struggles with configuring the response options for the chatbot (EcoBot) in EcoConnect. Nevertheless, through experimentation, I managed to make it responsive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I take great pride in the fact that I was able to develop the entire EcoConnect website within a limited timeframe. Additionally, I am equally proud that I was able to explore and experiment with no code platforms such as Bubble, which I initially decided to give a try.
What we learned
As this is my first hackathon, I gained valuable insights into the challenges associated with transforming a brainstormed idea into a functional and responsive application. The primary lesson I learned from this experience is that executing such a task requires unwavering focus, dedication, and above all, patience. Patience emerged as the most crucial factor because whenever a particular feature failed to work as intended, I had to repeatedly rework it and test it until it achieved the desired level of responsiveness.
What's next for EcoConnect
EcoConnect is an innovative platform that is continuously evolving and expanding its offerings. From a simple web application, it has the power to transform into a thriving community of individuals, particularly driven by the youth, who actively participate in brainstorming and executing ideas to promote sustainability. As more non-profit organizations and companies reach their intended market and organize fundraising events to support community activities, EcoConnect gets them moving. Sustainability entails more than just improving the planet; it also entails building a network in which everyone can participate and help, and EcoConnect seeks to enhance those ties.
