Inspiration
Plastic waste is a growing environmental challenge in Kerala, with limited structured systems for household-level disposal. We observed that although awareness exists, there is no convenient and rewarding mechanism to encourage proper recycling. This inspired us to build a solution that combines technology, incentives, and ease of use to promote responsible waste management
What it does
EcoCollect Waste AI is an AI-powered platform that helps users identify, manage, and recycle plastic waste efficiently. Users scan plastic items, and the system automatically classifies them. They can schedule pickups, track collectors in real time, and receive payments based on the waste they provide. The platform also ensures secure collection through OTP verification and provides a dashboard to track recycling activity, earnings, and environmental impact.
How we built it
The platform was developed as a full-stack mobile and web application using Next.js and React Native for the frontend, and Node.js with Firebase for backend services such as authentication, database, and real-time updates. TensorFlow was used to implement AI-based plastic classification. Google Maps API was integrated for live tracking and route visualization. Additional features like PDF bill generation and an AI chatbot were implemented to enhance user experience
Challenges we ran into
I faced challenges in achieving accurate AI-based classification of plastic waste and ensuring smooth integration with the application. Implementing real-time tracking with synchronized updates and animations required careful optimization. Ensuring secure OTP-based verification and managing multiple features without affecting performance were also key challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a complete end-to-end solution addressing a real-world problem. The integration of AI for waste classification, real-time tracking, secure verification, and a reward-based system makes the platform both innovative and practical. Delivering a functional and feature-rich prototype within a limited timeframe was a significant achievement.
What we learned
This project helped us gain hands-on experience in integrating AI into real-world applications, building scalable full-stack systems, and implementing real-time features. We also improved our understanding of user-centered design, system security, and the role of technology in solving environmental problems.
What's next for EcoCollect _Wast AI
We plan to enhance the platform by improving AI accuracy with larger datasets and expanding waste classification capabilities. Future developments include predictive analytics for waste generation, smart route optimization, digital wallet integration, and collaboration with municipalities. We also aim to scale the solution beyond Kerala and evolve it into a comprehensive smart waste management ecosystem.
