Inspiration

Modern software infrastructure contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, yet developers lack real-time visibility into the environmental footprint of their computational workloads. We built EcoCode Impact Auditor to bridge this gap, combining Green Software Foundation principles with an intuitive AI-assisted profiling interface.

What it does

  • Compute Impact Calculation: Accurately computes energy consumption (kWh) and operational carbon intensity (gCO2e) based on hardware specifications, runtime duration, and average CPU load.
  • Regional Grid Comparison: Compares carbon emission levels across major global cloud regions (US East, US West, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Singapore).
  • Green Code Heuristics: Audits Python code routines to flag energy-intensive algorithmic anti-patterns (such as nested loops or blocking sleep calls).
  • Tangible Metrics: Translates emissions into equivalent tree-days of carbon absorption.

How we built it

  • Planning & Architecture: Structured using the Devpost Learn Skill Pack methodologies (scope.md, prd.md, spec.md).
  • Core Engine: Pure Python 3.12 numerical carbon-intensity profiling module.
  • Frontend & Visualization: Interactive Streamlit dashboard with real-time reactive parameter binding and Pandas data analytics.

Challenges we ran into

Modeling realistic hardware thermal design power (TDP) and balancing theoretical power usage effectiveness (PUE) against variable cloud grid emission factors across distinct international regions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Developing a clean, zero-configuration local auditing dashboard in record time.
  • Providing actionable green computing insights alongside source-code level heuristic inspection.
  • Adhering strictly to standard engineering specs and project planning frameworks.

What we learned

We gained deeper insights into Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) metrics, regional grid carbon intensity dynamics, and how algorithmic efficiency directly translates into measurable environmental conservation.

What's next for EcoCode Impact Auditor

  • Integrating direct Git repository static analysis to scan entire codebases automatically.
  • Adding real-time cloud API connectors (AWS CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, GCP Carbon Footprint).
  • Expanding heuristic rules to support additional languages such as Go, Rust, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
