Inspiration

Our inspiration stems from the recognition that sustainable fashion often remains under-discussed in minority groups and non-English-speaking communities. Identifying this gap, we aimed to create a platform where user experience takes precedence, ensuring accessibility for everyone, regardless of their knowledge level in sustainable fashion or digital literacy.

What it does

Discover an aesthetically pleasing hub showcasing vetted sustainable brands. Tailor your experience by selecting your preferred language, making sustainable fashion accessible to a global audience. Seamlessly explore our platform with intuitive sorting and filtering options. Delve deeper into each brand's story, item categories such as fashion and makeup, and user reviews on their personalized formatted pages. As a unique feature, our interactive map beckons users to embark on a global exploration, pinpointing sustainable brands in their local vicinity or across the world.

How we built it

We used Figma to create the high-fidelity wireframes of our idea. We also used Coolors and Google fonts for the color palette choices and fonts that align with our message. For coding, we used React’s library; Leaflet, a google-geocoding API; a JSON-server

Challenges we ran into

Design:

  • Being able to coordinate the colors and style of our app. We went through multiple iterations of the color palette
  • choosing the best user journey to ensure the website is intuitive for all users was also a challenge

Code:

  • We struggled with dynamically storing and loading the data to the JSON server
  • We additionally ran into issues with asynchrony when rendering react components.
  • One of our components was working (stores page) until the last minute. but we added the pictures!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our ability to bring our idea to life. When we first started brainstorming, we had so many amazing ideas of what we wanted to incorporate into our website but we weren't sure if it was going to be possible. However, we stuck to our plan and made sure to follow a to-do list of the most important tasks to those that maybe weren't as much of a priority to us. We are super proud of the outcome, both design and functionality-wise!

What we learned

In the Project Post Mortem, We learned having to come up with an effective idea and build an app in under three days is a challenge. Some of the things that we as a team learned were, how to communicate effectively despite living in different time zones and the importance of dividing projects based on everyone's skill sets to guarantee the best outcome of the project.

What's next for EcoChic

Looking ahead, EcoChic is on a continuous journey. Our plans involve optimizing sorting/filtering functions and multiple language components for enhanced user efficiency. We're committed to expanding our brand repertoire, offering diverse styles beyond mainstream trends, with the potential to expand onto cosmetics. As the sustainability movement gains momentum globally, we envision EcoChic not just as a platform but as an educational hub and community catalyst. We challenge outdated practices in the fashion and makeup industry, embracing innovation as the pathway to a better future for current and future generations.
