Inspiration
As our group researched the theme of "Saving the World" we stumbled upon this one fact that said how 26% of the total carbon emissions of the world are contributed by food production emissions. This was a very impactful fact that we unearthed and made us realize that making more sustainable food choices in our daily can also be a change big enough to help the environment on a very large scale.
What it does
EcoCart basically recommends you food products, ranging from simple vegetables, fruits, and poultry to even ready-to-eat meals, that have low emissions during the production process. Each item has been given an overall score rating for the user to see and stay informed about what levels of carbon emissions each product has. Moreover, EcoCart also has a Meal Plan feature that lets users create meal prep ideas based on sustainable food products or just the food products that they have available in their cart.
How we built it
We found a database that showcased the emissions for about 500 different products and then by incorporating python and the gemini API with some fastAPI endpoints and a very neat swift UI we had a basic functioning app ready.
Challenges we ran into
From finding a good data base to making the buttons look the right size, every step of the development process has been a big challenge for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team only consists of freshmen team members and we are proud of being able to reach at this point and build a fully functioning. Our app might not be perfect YET, but we believe we have grown as developers and designers since we started this project and have genuinely outdone ourselves by the end of it.
