🌱 Inspiration EcoCart AI was born from a growing awareness of the environmental impact of modern e-commerce. With each online order contributing to carbon emissions through packaging, shipping, and returns, we felt a strong urge to create a solution that helps shoppers make more sustainable choices. Inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — especially Climate Action, Responsible Consumption, and Industry Innovation — we envisioned a tool that could empower consumers, not overwhelm them. Our goal: make sustainable shopping simple, informed, and even fun.

🤖 What It Does EcoCart AI is a browser extension + backend system that:

Analyzes your online cart in real time

Estimates the carbon footprint of the items based on manufacturing, shipping distance, and material usage

Suggests eco-friendly alternatives that are ethically produced or have lower environmental impact

Gamifies sustainable behavior by rewarding users with points, badges, or green scores

Offers educational insights about how small changes can lead to real-world impact

🛠️ How We Built It Frontend: React + TypeScript (for the browser extension interface)

Backend: Node.js + Express API for data processing and alternative suggestions

AI Integration: OpenAI API + custom models to calculate environmental impact based on product metadata

Sustainability Dataset: Pulled from publicly available product databases, lifecycle assessments, and eco-label repositories

Gamification Layer: Simple reward engine using local storage and badges system

🧱 Challenges We Ran Into Sourcing accurate and consistent environmental data for a wide variety of products was more complex than expected

Matching products with valid, verified eco-friendly alternatives without compromising user experience

Building a solution that was lightweight and non-intrusive, especially as a browser extension

Ensuring that AI predictions were explainable and didn't feel like a black box

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of Built a working MVP of a browser extension that analyzes a live cart on multiple e-commerce sites

Developed a system that suggests greener alternatives using real-time metadata and AI logic

Created a gamification framework that makes responsible shopping more engaging

Got positive feedback from early testers who said, “I didn’t realize how much my cart could cost the planet — this opened my eyes.”

📚 What We Learned User awareness is high, but action tools are missing — people want to shop responsibly if you make it easy

AI can be a powerful ally in the sustainability space, but transparency and trust are critical

It's important to meet users where they are — not by radically changing behavior, but by nudging better choices
