Inspiration: Every shopping trip has an environmental impact, but most people never see it. While nutrition labels help us understand the health impact of our food, there is no simple way to understand the sustainability impact of everyday purchases.
We wanted to build a tool that makes environmental awareness as easy as scanning a receipt. Instead of asking people to change their habits overnight, EcoCart AI helps them make small, practical improvements that add up over time.
What it Does: EcoCart AI is an AI-powered receipt analyzer that transforms grocery receipts into personalized sustainability reports.
Users simply upload a receipt, and the application:
- Extracts purchased items using AI vision
- Calculates a sustainability (carbon) score
- Identifies high-impact purchases
- Recommends greener alternatives
- Estimates potential environmental and financial savings
- Tracks progress across previous receipts
- Awards achievements and weekly sustainability challenges
The goal is to encourage smarter shopping through simple, actionable insights rather than overwhelming statistics.
How I Built It: I built EcoCart AI using modern web technologies and AI.
Frontend: React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS
AI: OpenAI Vision (GPT-5 mini) for receipt understanding
EcoCart AI lets users upload a grocery receipt and instantly receive a personalized sustainability report. It analyzes the items, calculates a carbon score, highlights high-impact purchases, suggests greener alternatives, provides AI-powered shopping tips, tracks progress over time, and rewards users with fun achievements and weekly challenges to encourage more sustainable shopping habits.
One of the biggest challenges was making the experience feel useful instead of overwhelming.
I also worked on:
- Designing a scoring system that is easy to understand
- Presenting environmental data in a simple and motivating way
- Generating realistic recommendations rather than generic advice
- Creating a clean, startup-style interface suitable for everyday users
- Comparing multiple receipts to show measurable improvement over time
Another challenge was ensuring the AI produced consistent, believable sustainability recommendations while keeping the interface fast and intuitive.
What We Learned
This project taught us that AI can do much more than answer questions—it can help people make better everyday decisions.
I also gained experience with:
- Building AI-powered user experiences
- Prompt engineering
- AI vision for document understanding
- Designing sustainable technology products
- Creating intuitive dashboards for complex information
- Future Improvements
I plan to expand EcoCart AI with:
- Barcode scanning for individual products
- Personalized shopping recommendations
- Store-specific sustainability comparisons
- Household sustainability tracking
- Monthly environmental reports
- Integration with grocery retailers and loyalty programs
Why EcoCart AI Matters: Small shopping decisions happen every day. If millions of people could instantly understand the environmental impact of their purchases, they could make better choices without changing their lifestyle dramatically.
EcoCart AI turns an ordinary receipt into an opportunity to build healthier habits—for both people and the planet. 🌎💚
