Inspiration
ECOBOT was inspired by the need to address the large amounts of organic waste on our campus. Instead of letting it go to waste, we saw an opportunity to repurpose it into compost, promoting sustainability.
What it does
ECOBOT automates the collection and breakdown of organic waste, converting it into high-quality compost using bacteria, enzymes, and sensors that monitor temperature and moisture for efficient composting.
How we built it
We combined hardware (shredders, sensors) with software (Python backend) to monitor and optimize the composting process. Sensors track key conditions, while machine learning helps fine-tune compost production.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges included balancing the bacteria and enzymes for efficient composting, integrating hardware with software, and ensuring the system could handle a large volume of waste.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We developed a functioning prototype that speeds up the composting process and integrates real-time monitoring, producing usable compost faster than traditional methods.
What we learned
We learned about the science of composting, IoT integration, and teamwork, improving both our technical and collaboration skills.
What's next for ECOBOT
We plan to scale ECOBOT across campus, improve its waste-handling capacity, and explore automation for broader sustainability initiatives.
