Inspiration

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, with global temperatures rising and environmental degradation accelerating at an unprecedented rate. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), human activities have caused approximately 1.0°C of global warming above pre-industrial levels, and this is likely to reach 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052 if it continues at the current rate.

Despite widespread awareness, many individuals feel powerless or unsure about how to contribute meaningfully to environmental conservation. Studies show that while 80% of people are concerned about climate change, less than 20% actively engage in sustainable practices due to a lack of accessible information and practical tools.

EcoBite was born out of the desire to empower individuals to make impactful changes in their daily lives, specifically through mindful consumption and waste management. I recognized that food consumption is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, with the food sector accounting for up to 30% of global emissions. By providing a platform that educates and facilitates sustainable choices, I aim to bridge the gap between intention and action.

What it does

EcoBite is a comprehensive web application designed to promote sustainable living by focusing on three core areas: Eco-Friendly Consumption, Waste Reduction, and Community Engagement. Key Features:

  • Product Scanner: Eco-Score Evaluation: Users can scan barcodes to receive detailed information about a product's environmental impact, including carbon footprint, water usage, and packaging recyclability.

  • Eco-Friendly Recipes: Access a database of recipes that prioritize seasonal, local, and plant-based ingredients to reduce environmental impact. Provides health benefits alongside ecological data.

  • DIY Composting Guide: Step-by-Step Tutorials: Interactive guides on how to start composting at home, tailored to different living situations (e.g., apartments, houses).

  • Troubleshooting Tips: Addresses common issues like odor control and pest prevention.

  • Sustainable Habits Playlist: Daily Tips with personalized suggestions for small, actionable steps to reduce environmental footprint, interactive quizzes for engaging quizzes to test knowledge and encourage habit formation.

  • Eco-News Feed: Latest news articles, podcasts, research findings, and policy updates related to environmental sustainability.

  • AI Eco Chatbot: Provides instant answers to questions about sustainability, eco-friendly practices, and product information. Continuously improves responses based on user interactions.

  • Image Recognition: Allows users to photograph products or ingredients to receive ecological information without barcodes.

  • Habit Tracker: Users can log eco-friendly actions and track their impact over time, such as carbon emissions saved.

  • Goal Setting: Ability to set and achieve personal sustainability goals.

  • Meal Planner: Organize meals for the week based on ecological impact, dietary preferences, and budget.

How I built it

I developed EcoBite using a low-code/no-code approach, focusing heavily on design and user experience with Figma as my primary tool. My journey began with a strong desire to meet the need for accessible and practical tools that enable sustainable living. I conducted extensive research to understand the challenges people face when trying to adopt eco-friendly habits. This involved reading articles, analyzing studies on consumer behavior, and gathering feedback from potential users.

Understanding that information overload can be a barrier, I aimed to create an intuitive and engaging interface that simplifies access to ecological information. I prioritized user experience by designing clear navigation paths, visually appealing layouts, and interactive elements that encourage regular use. The research phase also highlighted the importance of personalization, so I incorporated features that adapt to individual preferences and habits.

By focusing on the user's perspective, I strived to create a platform that not only informs but also motivates and empowers individuals to make sustainable choices effortlessly.

Challenges I ran into

One significant challenge was presenting complex environmental data in a user-friendly manner. Ensuring that the Eco-Score system is both accurate and easily understandable required careful consideration. Balancing detailed information without overwhelming users was a delicate task. Additionally, working alone meant managing all aspects of the project, from research to design, which was demanding but ultimately rewarding. The limitations of no-code tools also posed constraints on implementing certain interactive features, which I addressed by focusing on the most impactful functionalities.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of creating a holistic platform that addresses multiple facets of sustainable living. Developing EcoBite has allowed me to merge my passion for environmental conservation with my skills in design and user experience. Successfully integrating educational content with practical tools empowers users to make eco-conscious decisions. The positive feedback from initial user testing reassured me that the application could genuinely make a difference in people's lives.

What's next for EcoBite

Moving forward, I plan to develop EcoBite into a fully functional web application. This involves integrating real-time data through APIs to provide up-to-date product information and ecological metrics. Enhancing the AI capabilities for personalized user experiences is also a priority. I aim to expand accessibility by creating mobile applications for iOS and Android. Additionally, I'm considering partnerships with environmental organizations and sustainable brands to enrich the platform's content and reach. Continual improvement based on user feedback will remain central as I strive to make EcoBite a valuable tool in promoting sustainable living.
