Inspiration

I was inspired by the persistent gap between sustainability knowledge and real-world action. While many are aware of global environmental issues, they often lack the interactive and measurable digital tools needed to change their daily habits. I wanted to align our technical skills with Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), to create a platform that makes eco-friendly living accessible to students and the general public.

What it does

EcoAware is a comprehensive web portal designed to promote a sustainable lifestyle through several key features: -Carbon Footprint Calculator: Allows users to calculate their daily carbon emissions and receive personalized tips to reduce them. -Eco Challenges: Encourages users to adopt green habits, such as using reusable bottles or planting trees, while earning "Eco Points". -Community Cleanup Drives: A module to schedule and join local environmental events at locations like Juhu or Versova Beach. -Quiz: to test users on sustainability regularly. -User Dashboard: Tracks personal progress, including completed challenges and "Recycling Streaks".

How we built it

As a second-year Computer Engineering student, I developed this project using a robust tech stack: -Frontend: Crafted with React.js for a dynamic user interface. -Backend: Powered by Node.js and Express.js to handle the portal's core logic. -Database: Utilizes MySQL to manage user data, footprints, and drive schedules. -Design Philosophy: We followed a three-layer architecture—Presentation, Application, and Data—to ensure the system is scalable for future enhancements.

Challenges we ran into

Developing a full-stack portal presented several technical and logistical hurdles: -Database Integration: Connecting the complex logic of the Carbon Calculator and Challenges modules to our MySQL database remains a significant task. -Real-Time Data: Ensuring the user dashboard reflects dynamic updates rather than remaining static was a major hurdle during the initial build. -Administrative Complexity: Building a functional admin panel that allows for the full management of users and cleanup drive data proved difficult to implement fully.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

I am incredibly proud of successfully creating a working prototype that offers a tangible way for people to engage with sustainability. I also successfully built a functioning "Schedule Drive" system that can trigger successful notifications for community events and "Challenges " so user can complete the challenges taking a step further towards sustainability and also developed a carbon footprint calculator to calculate carbon emission. We also have quiz to test users on sustainability regularly.

What we learned

This project was a massive learning curve for me: -Technical Growth: We moved from theoretical concepts to practical implementation (specifically using MySQL). -Environmental Science: We gained a deeper understanding of how lifestyle choices translate into carbon emissions. -Project Management: We learned how to identify "Pending Work" and prioritize features to reach a viable prototype.

What's next for EcoAware:

-Enhanced Admin Tools: Expanding the administrator's ability to view and manage the user base effectively. -Dashboards: Transitioning the user interface to fully reflect real-time eco-impact data.
