Inspiration

The growing threat of climate change inspired our app Eco-Track. We have noticed that many people do want to make a difference and become more eco-friendly, but they don't know how to do it without disturbing their daily lives. Because of this, they don’t bother actually making the effort. We sought to change this by coming up with a way to help people make a difference without affecting their daily lives.

What it does

This led us to develop Eco-Track, an app that promotes sustainability through fewer vehicle emissions. From there we added numerous features to the app like the Carbon Calculator that calculates your monthly and yearly carbon emissions based on data provided by the users and the Eco-Map that gives you information on “green” routes to take using different modes of transportation. Saving more energy and carbon can earn you points that can be exchanged for rewards.

How we built it

We built Eco-Track on code.org. We used Python Block Code to develop our app and its various features.

Challenges we ran into

We had a couple of challenges that we ran into. For example, one of our ex-team members was not committed enough towards the project, and barely assisted in the works of our creation. Through these challenges, we persevered, learning and achieving many feats.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Won our regional competition.
  • Won states
  • Placed top 4 in nationals out of 5000+ other teams, and were the only middle school team in the top 4.

What we learned

At the end of it all, we not only successfully developed Eco-Track, but we also learned that we can make a difference in our world if we choose to take initiative and stay determined.

What's next for Eco-Track

Our goal is to expand our reach beyond the East Coast and bring our services to customers across the United States and even internationally. We believe that we can make an impact on people's lives, no matter where they are located. We also plan on adding new rewards and features, such as keeping track of the number of passengers in a vehicle, specific types of vehicles, and keeping track of the electricity usage in your house.
