Inspiration
The inspiration for Strong Sister emerged from the urgent need to address gender-based violence (GBV) in Burundi. The alarming rise in cases of violence against women and girls highlighted the dire need for a platform that could provide support, resources, and empowerment. Recognizing the gap in accessible tools for Burundian women to protect themselves and advocate for their rights, Strong Sister was conceived as a beacon of hope and resilience.
What it does
Strong Sister is a transformative digital platform dedicated to empowering Burundian women and girls by providing tools, resources, and support to combat gender-based violence. It offers a comprehensive and user-friendly approach to tackling GBV, focusing on education, community building, and direct assistance. Key features include:
- AI-Powered Chatbot: Offers instant support and guidance on dealing with GBV, trained to provide information within the context of the app.
- Safe Spaces Mapping: Identifies and lists secure locations where women can seek refuge or assistance.
- Resource Center: Provides educational materials on rights, self-defense, and access to legal support.
- Community Support: Facilitates connection with local organizations and peer groups for solidarity and mutual aid.
- Real-Time Alerts: Allows users to send immediate alerts to trusted contacts in case of an emergency.
How we built it
Strong Sister was developed with a focus on accessibility, reliability, and security, ensuring that the platform could be a trusted ally for women in need. The frontend was built using Flutter, providing a seamless and intuitive user interface compatible across multiple devices, while the backend is powered by Firebase, ensuring real-time data management and secure user authentication.

Challenges we ran into
Creating Strong Sister within a limited timeframe posed several challenges, including:
- Ensuring Contextual Relevance: Training the AI chatbot to provide responses specific to GBV while maintaining context relevance was crucial. It required careful scripting and extensive testing.
- Security Concerns: Protecting the privacy and data of users was paramount. Implementing secure data handling practices and encryption protocols was a significant focus.
- Integration of Real-Time Features: Developing the real-time alert system and ensuring it was responsive across various network conditions required meticulous backend optimization.
Despite these challenges, the Strong Sister team persevered, driven by the shared mission of empowering Burundian women. The development process underscored the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and user-centered design.
