ECO SIM - A VISUAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Eco-sim is a 2D pixelated combination sim that simulates several species relations in an ecosystem accurately. My proposed solution is simple but effective in educating people of the intricacies of an ecosystem. It will show each listed flora and fauna with their real life attributes and how they interact with each other, whether it be competition, parasitism or commensalism, to name a few.
This simple interactive point and click game opens with a limited amount of important flora and fauna in the elements tab, with a relatively empty world. Its the user’s choice to plant flora and fauna in the environment. As soon as the user selects to organisms from the panel, their interaction is shown through a mesmerizing pixel animation. It is a repeatable process where the user can figure out combinations of interactions. This shows the user how population interaction in the ecosystem works, with examples they won’t be able to forget.
The prototype was built in the game engine, Game Master. The inbuilt editor was used to write scripts for the prototype objects. The process went the following way:
- Elements were imported as PNG to different sprites.
- The sprites were imported to their separate objects, to which scripts were added.
- Separate rooms and child rooms were created to change game screen according to user interaction.
- The sprites and objects were added in as layers through the asset and instance layers in each room.
- The prototype was then exported as a .exe file to the desktop.
I am proud to say that all assets (except background and the animations of 3 objects-cat, rat and play button) were made by me from scratch. This was my first time with pixel graphics and game making and I am proud of the final result.
To conclude and summarize:
The educational game is a 2D pixelated point and click match sim to help students understand population interaction.
It has hundreds of combinations, which function as examples for students to understand species interaction.
It is a dynamic fast paced sim which shows combination results with just a click, making it perfect for students with short attention span, ADHD and ADD.
Thank you.
