Inspiration

Creating an application that can enhance awareness of climate change through an individual environmental responsibility tracker, which tracks carbon emissions reduction, waste diversion, and water conservation focused on the college community. This application will provide incentives for students to engage in individual environmental responsibility by earning points/currency that can be redeemed for various rewards offered by related educational institutions.

Why focus on higher education? Because awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and education on environmental responsibility should start from educational institutions. While primary and secondary educational institutions can provide education on the topic, they may not provide opportunities, freedom, or responsibility for students to take meaningful actions. [citation needed, why higher education are better suited for educating about sustainability]

Interestingly, environmental consciousness among students tends to decline as their educational level increases (Sanchez-Llorens et al., 2019 & Sevencan et al., 2017). Both studies have multiple assessment parameters, and in statistically significant parameters, it is found that higher education leads to increased apathy (possibly due to a desire for a simpler lifestyle). Many individuals graduate before disruptive actions can be taken, thus necessitating an effective and engaging method, especially for those pursuing higher education.

For example, through this app, you can participate in fun, environmentally sustainable activities with a large group of friends, your closest companions, or simply log your personal activities.

What it does

It tracks your green habit while giving you rewards for doing so, educating you about sustainability, giving you real-time updates about the air and weather conditions, and providing you a community to discuss and take on group challenges for a greener future!

How we built it

With Figma to prototype and notion to brainstorm.

Challenges we ran into

Issues with rendering the video and the save file got corrupted so we had to remake the video.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our main vision for the app is done, but we still have a lot of ideas. We still finished it though!

What we learned

Managing time is important to make sure that our main responsibilities and hackathon are balanced.

What's next for Eco-Nnect

We hope that this app will bring attention to higher education around the world to create an impact. Not just metrics and achieving KPIs for green campuses, but creating an environment for the students to truly take action to battle against climate change themselves.
