EcoMute

Inspiration

Our inspiration for EcoMute came from a desire to raise awareness about the environmental impact of transportation choices and empower individuals to make informed decisions about how they commute.

What it does

EcoMute is a web app that calculates estimated carbon dioxide emissions for daily commutes based on various factors, including distance, transportation mode, and fuel type. Users can enter their starting point and destination, choose their mode of transportation, and view the emissions data to better understand their carbon footprint.

How we built it

We built EcoMute using Next.js. We used Google Maps API to calculate distance and geolocation data, and integrated data from reputable sources such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the International Energy Agency to calculate emissions data. This project also served as an opportunity for us to learn and work with new technologies such as Next.js and Typescript.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges we faced was integrating the Google Maps API and ensuring that the emissions data was accurate and up-to-date. We also had to work through some issues with the calculations for emissions from walking and biking. Additionally, this was our first time using Next.js and TypeScript for a project, which presented its own set of challenges that we were able to overcome with teamwork and research.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the user-friendly interface we created for EcoMute, and the comprehensive emissions data that we're able to provide to users. We're also proud of the way we were able to work collaboratively as a team to tackle challenges and build a functional web app in a short amount of time.

What we learned

Through working on EcoMute, we gained valuable experience with integrating APIs, working with data, building a full-stack web application, and learning to work with new technologies such as Next and Typescript. We also learned about the importance of accuracy and transparency when it comes to environmental data.

What's next for EcoMute

In the future, we would like to continue improving and expanding upon EcoMute's features, including adding a user profile feature, more accurate emissions calculations, and resources for reducing emissions. We also hope to explore partnerships with transportation companies and other organizations to further promote sustainable commuting choices.
