Inspiration
We were inspired by a simple contradiction: while climate anxiety is high among youth, sustainable actions often feel invisible and unrewarding. We asked, "What if saving energy felt as engaging as playing a mobile game?" We wanted to bridge the gap between intention and action for Gen Z, turning responsible habits into a delightful daily ritual.
What it does
Eco-Mission is a gamified web platform that links your real-world interactions with Green Wells Energies to the health of a personalized virtual ecosystem. Users earn points and "heal" their digital planet by completing missions like scheduling efficient deliveries, scanning QR codes on returned cylinders, and acing safety quizzes.
How we built it
- Front-end: We built a responsive and interactive single-page application using React and CSS3 animations to bring the virtual planet to life.
- Back-end: A lightweight Node.js/Express server handles user data, mission tracking, and planet state logic.
- QR Integration: We used the QRCode.js library to generate and simulate scanning for the cylinder return feature.
- Prototyping: Figma was crucial for initial UI/UX design and testing the user flow before a single line of code was written.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing Fun and Function: The biggest challenge was designing game mechanics that were genuinely engaging without overshadowing the core purpose of promoting real-world energy habits.
- Technical Hurdles: Creating a dynamic, stateful planet that visually responded to user actions in real-time required careful management of component state in React.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of creating a prototype that test users didn't want to stop interacting with. The moment someone said, "I'd actually return my cylinder on time to see my planet get cleaner," we knew we had successfully merged purpose with play.
What we learned
We learned that effective innovation in the energy sector isn't just about complex algorithms; it's about human psychology. Engaging the next generation requires speaking their language—and gamification, with its immediate feedback and rewards, is a powerful dialect.
What's next for Eco-Mission
- Mobile App Development: Transitioning from a web MVP to a native iOS and Android app.
- Green Wells Loyalty Integration: Allowing Eco-Mission points to be redeemed for discounts or perks within the existing customer loyalty program.
- Advanced Mission Types: Incorporating IoT data from smart meters or partnering with other sustainable brands to create a broader "eco-lifestyle" platform.
- Social Features: Adding leaderboards and cooperative "planet-healing" challenges to foster community competition and collaboration.
