Inspiration
The inspiration for Eco Leap came from a desire to teach kids about sustainability in a fun, interactive way. We wanted to create a game that would foster lifelong eco-conscious habits by making sustainability accessible and engaging. Our goal was to use gamification to encourage kids to practice eco-friendly activities in the real world, helping them build a connection with nature and environmental responsibility from an early age.
What it does
Eco Leap is an educational app where kids learn sustainability through fun challenges. Guided by a friendly froggie companion, players earn points by completing eco-friendly tasks, both in-game and in the real world. Each week, kids can take on new challenges that encourage them to practice sustainability outdoors, capturing their activities with a camera feature. At the end of each month, Eco Leap creates a personalized collage of their achievements, celebrating their progress and encouraging continued learning.
How we built it
We built Eco Leap on Figma, focusing on a playful, intuitive interface designed to appeal to young users. The user journey includes interactive game screens, a camera feature for capturing real-world activities, and a points-based reward system. Our team collaborated on the design elements and user flow, carefully crafting each feature to make sustainability learning fun and engaging.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was the 24-hour designathon timeframe, which made it tough to fully develop our ideas without feeling rushed. Balancing speed with quality was a constant struggle as we quickly sketched ideas, iterated on feedback, and made design decisions. Additionally, finding the right balance between gamification and educational content required rapid adjustments to make sure the app would be fun and engaging without overwhelming young users. Despite the time crunch, we pushed through to create a concept we’re proud of, learning how to prioritize features and refine our workflow under pressure.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a concept that bridges digital learning with real-world action, encouraging kids to step outside and put their knowledge into practice. Our team successfully integrated interactive elements with an educational mission, all while keeping the app engaging and visually appealing for children. We’re also proud of the monthly collage feature, which celebrates users’ progress in a tangible way.
What we learned
This project taught us a lot about designing for younger audiences, balancing visual appeal with simplicity and usability. We also learned the importance of iterative feedback, especially when designing educational tools. Exploring ways to combine gamification with real-world impact was a valuable lesson in creating meaningful, engaging digital experiences.
What's next for Eco Leap
Next, we plan to refine Eco Leap into a fully functional prototype. With only 24 hours to design, we focused on core concepts, so now we’d like to dive deeper into perfecting the game mechanics, user flow, and educational elements. We aim to enhance interactivity, add more challenges across different sustainability topics, and refine the camera feature for capturing real-world actions.
