💡 Inspiration Transportation is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions, and many people unknowingly take routes that are not environmentally friendly. We wanted to create a simple tool that helps users make greener travel choices by prioritizing walking, biking, and public transport over driving. This aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting sustainable cities and climate action.
🚀 What It Does The Eco-Friendly Travel Route Planner helps users find the most sustainable route between two locations. It: ✅ Suggests routes for walking, biking, or public transport. ✅ Estimates CO₂ emissions saved compared to driving. ✅ Displays an interactive map of the best eco-friendly route. ✅ Encourages sustainable travel choices to reduce environmental impact.
🛠 How We Built It Python as the core programming language. Google Maps API for real-time route suggestions. Folium to generate interactive maps. Geopy for geolocation processing. Flask (Optional Extension) for a web-based interface. ⚡ Challenges We Ran Into Google Maps API limitations, such as free-tier restrictions. Accurate CO₂ estimation, since emissions vary by vehicle and location. User input validation, ensuring correct addresses and travel modes. 🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of Successfully built a working prototype that generates green travel routes. Integrated CO₂ savings calculation to highlight environmental impact. Created a user-friendly experience with interactive maps. 📚 What We Learned How to work with Google Maps API for route optimization. Implementing Folium for dynamic mapping in Python. The importance of sustainability in transportation. How small behavioral changes in commuting can have a big impact on the environment. 🔮 What's Next for Eco-Friendly Travel Route Planner Mobile App Version using Kivy or React Native. Real-time Public Transport Data integration. Crowdsourced Eco-Friendly Routes for better local recommendations. Gamification Features to reward users for making green travel choices. OpenStreetMap API as a free alternative to Google Maps.
