Inspiration
In the midst of alarming global warming rates and the significant CO2 emissions from conventional household heating and cooling methods, we sought to develop a sustainable and efficient solution that reduces our carbon footprint.
What it does
Our "Eco-Friendly Home Heating and Cooling System" merges the efficiency of heat pumps with the renewable energy of solar water heaters. Instead of the traditional reliance on gas and electricity, we've created a system that takes advantage of the consistent temperatures underground and the renewable energy of the sun.
How we built it
- Research & Development: Focused on understanding the principles behind the temperature increase when compressing fluids and the drop when allowing them to expand.
- Integration of Geothermal: By understanding that underground temperatures are consistently cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter compared to the atmosphere, we harnessed this stability for our system.
- Solar Water Heaters: Incorporated solar thermal technology to produce warm water, which is then used as a heat exchange source for our heat pump.
Challenges we ran into
Achieving optimal efficiency in very cold temperatures (below 32˚F). Ensuring consistent supply of warm water from the solar water heaters, especially during non-sunny days.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully reducing the summer CO2 emission equivalent of 125 pine trees to half. Lowering the winter CO2 emission equivalent of 223 pine trees to the amount absorbed by just 50 trees. Making installation easier and more accessible by reducing the pipe depth from 50ft to just 1ft.
What we learned
The vast potential of combining various renewable energy technologies. The significance of the environmental impact from traditional heating and cooling methods in households. Innovations in technology can lead to tangible changes in reducing our carbon footprint.
What's next for Eco-Friendly Home Heating and Cooling System
- Scaling: Work with residential builders and contractors to incorporate our system in new housing developments.
- Improvement: Continuously refine the integration of the solar water heater with the heat pump to achieve even better efficiencies.
- Awareness: Engage in community outreach and education to spread the word on the importance and benefits of an eco-friendly heating and cooling system.
