Inspiration
From our experience, it has always been difficult trying to find climate change resources that are concise and easy to understand. The internet has so much information and it is scattered everywhere. We wanted to create a resource that would contain the important information regarding environment issues all in one place. Also, a lot of the the websites out there are packed with facts that are not very interesting, so we wanted to create a resource that would be interactive, fun and engaging for the users so that they would visit our site and be encouraged to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.
What it does
We at Eco-Focus are intent on making environmental news and resources more accessible and digestible to younger generations, while also helping others transition into an eco-friendly lifestyle to help combat the climate crisis. All information you need to learn about the causes of the climate crisis, and tips to live an eco-friendly lifestyle are concisely explained in one place. Along with all the information about climate change, we also have interactive features like quizzes and challenges to keep our users engaged.
How we built it
We built is using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We used Repl.it to collaborate.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges were ran into was implementing the login because Repl.it could not support setting up a database that we needed. We spent a long time researching ways to implement a login using only HTML, CSS and JavaScript and we were successful at setting up the framework for it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our Eco Focus News page because we think it will be really helpful for users to simply type in their location and get all the important information related to climate change in their area. It makes it a lot easier to learn about climate change because all the information they need about their city is compiled there. We are also proud of the layout and design of our website because it is very user friendly and follows a consistent theme.
What we learned
We not only expanded our knowledge about climate change issues but we also furthered our knowledge on web development.. Prior to this Hackathon, none of our team members knew how to implement the quizzes, checklist challenges, sign in features and other features on website because we had minimal knowledge of web development. During the workshops, we learned how to use GitHub, APIs, iOS development and UX design. We hope to use these skills in the future!
What's next for Eco Focus
We plan on setting up the sign in and login pages so that users can save information such as their quiz scores and challenges. We also plan on having a point system where users are awarded Eco Focus points if they spend more time on our site.
