Inspiration

Climate change can feel like an enormous problem with no obvious way for an individual to help. We wanted to bridge the gap between knowing that environmental problems exist and actually taking meaningful action. Eco Buddy was inspired by the idea that AI could make climate action personalized, practical, and measurable instead of overwhelming.

What it does

Eco Buddy is an AI-powered environmental companion that helps users understand their environmental impact and turn that information into concrete actions. Instead of simply providing climate information, Eco Buddy analyzes a user's situation, recommends personalized actions, and helps them understand the potential impact of those decisions.

How we built it

We built Eco Buddy as a web-based application with a modern, responsive interface and an AI-powered backend. The core experience combines user inputs, environmental information, and AI-generated recommendations to create personalized action plans. We focused on building a functional prototype with a simple user experience so the value of the product could be demonstrated quickly.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was narrowing such a massive problem as climate change into something that could realistically be addressed during a three-day hackathon. We also had to balance ambitious ideas with what could actually be implemented and demonstrated. Making AI genuinely useful rather than simply adding a chatbot was another major challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we turned a broad environmental problem into a functional, interactive product within the hackathon timeframe. We created an experience where AI is directly connected to environmental action rather than being used as a generic information tool. We are especially proud of creating a prototype that could serve as the foundation for a much larger platform.

What we learned

We learned that solving a global problem starts with defining a very specific user problem. We also learned that strong products are not necessarily the ones with the most features—they are the ones that make one important action dramatically easier. Most importantly, we learned how to rapidly move from an idea to a working prototype while continuously prioritizing impact, feasibility, and user experience.

What's next for Eco Buddy

Next, we want to make Eco Buddy significantly more data-driven and personalized. We plan to integrate more reliable environmental datasets, improve impact calculations, expand the types of environmental actions users can take, and develop systems for tracking real-world outcomes over time. Ultimately, we want Eco Buddy to evolve from an AI environmental assistant into a platform that helps millions of people turn everyday decisions into measurable environmental impact.
