Inspiration

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, yet individual environmental actions often go unrecognized and unrewarded. We were inspired by the idea that every small eco-friendly action - from walking instead of driving to properly recycling - should have tangible value. We wanted to create a system that gamifies sustainability and makes environmental consciousness financially rewarding for everyday people.

What it does

Eco Blockchain is a revolutionary mobile application that automatically tracks your personal carbon footprint through smartphone sensors and converts your eco-friendly actions into tradeable tokens. The app monitors your daily steps (promoting walking over driving), uses GPS to detect sustainable transportation choices, and allows you to scan QR codes on recycling bins to verify recycling activities. Each positive environmental action earns you EcoTokens, which can be exchanged for real-world rewards like discounts at eco-friendly stores, public transport vouchers, or even cash rewards from participating businesses.

How we built it

We developed Eco Blockchain using a hybrid approach combining mobile development and blockchain technology. The frontend is built with React Native for cross-platform compatibility, integrating device sensors like accelerometer for step counting and GPS for location tracking. We implemented a lightweight blockchain using Ethereum smart contracts to manage token creation and transactions. The QR code scanning feature uses the device camera with ML Kit for real-time recognition. Our backend API processes environmental data and calculates carbon offset values based on established environmental science metrics.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was accurately calculating carbon footprint from limited smartphone data while maintaining user privacy. We had to develop sophisticated algorithms to differentiate between walking, cycling, and driving using only GPS and accelerometer data. Another major hurdle was creating a fair tokenization system that prevents gaming while encouraging genuine environmental behavior. Integrating blockchain functionality while keeping the app lightweight and fast also required significant optimization work.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a working prototype that can accurately track multiple environmental activities and convert them into blockchain tokens within just 48 hours. Our algorithm achieved 85% accuracy in transportation mode detection using only smartphone sensors. We also established partnerships with 3 local businesses willing to accept our EcoTokens as payment, proving the real-world viability of our concept. Most importantly, our beta testers reported a 40% increase in eco-friendly behaviors after just one week of using the app.

What we learned

This project taught us the immense potential of combining IoT data with blockchain incentives to drive behavioral change. We learned that users are highly motivated by immediate, tangible rewards for positive actions. We also discovered the importance of transparent algorithms - users need to understand exactly how their actions translate to tokens for the system to build trust. Additionally, we gained valuable insights into the technical challenges of mobile blockchain applications and the need for energy-efficient consensus mechanisms.

What's next for Eco Blockchain

Our roadmap includes expanding to corporate partnerships where companies can purchase carbon credits directly from users, creating a true peer-to-peer environmental marketplace. We plan to integrate with smart home devices and electric vehicles for more comprehensive tracking. We're also developing a social feature where families and communities can compete in eco-challenges. Long-term, we envision Eco Blockchain becoming a global standard for personal carbon accounting, potentially integrating with government carbon tax systems and international climate initiatives.
