Inspiration

Recent environmental controversies have revolved around concern with how much water is being used to cool data centers that are the heart the chatGPT experience. From image generation to conversations with chatGPT

What it does

Enabling eco mode will run on chatGPT and the system will intercept your prompts and send a "reduced prompt" that will save a small percentage of water.

There are two types on inputs the system intercepts:

  • Image uploads: when you upload an image you will be able to reduce the size, number of tokens, the memory of the image to a more efficient version to send into chatGPT

  • Text Prompts: when you write text, any ambiguity in your speech that have no affect on the prompt when taken away will automatically be removed from the prompt before being send to chatGPT

both methods ensure that you are still able to get the most out of your chatGPT experience while also conserving what could've potentially be wasted water

as you use eco AI you are able to see the amount of water you are conserving adding up.

The more you use it, the more water you conserve

and the more people are using it, we can potential conserve bottles to gallons to TONS of water.

How we built it

eco AI is developed as a chrome extension using HTML/CSS and javascript and the existing chrome storage to save your built up amount of water reduced.

Finding the accurate data relationship between the size of images and text prompts the result of this paper written by PHD students in UC Berkeley that gave us the information we need about the relationship between tokens and water usage.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges we ran into was creating a program that is able to reduce the prompts as efficiently as possible while also retaining the correct amount information that is need for the user to get their desired output. We wanted eco AI to seamlessly run in the background when enabled and chatGPT to work the exact same as you conserve water.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of the things that we are proud of is not only creating something that helps people conserve water using AI but also do it where it doesn't make chatGPT work "less" in anyway. Instead chatGPT is used more efficient in terms of better prompts and that much better of an environmental impact.

Another thing we are proud of is creating a feature where you can share a screenshot of your conserved water amount using AI in a instagram story post style to potentially spread awareness of the movement and with more people participating in using eco AI the bigger the impact it makes to the environments natural resources like water.

What we learned

This project allowed us to value the idea of "small steps to a bigger problem". Conserving just a tiny drop of water does not feel like a big deal. But taking the step to create small steps that we people can build on and gather a community of people conserving water using AI is something that can make real change. We know that data centers that run chatGPT or even other AI software will have to rely on water for cooling down. But for the first time ever time we created a way for you have that part done more efficiently instead of wastefully.

What's next for eco AI

We plan on publishing the chrome extension! So the next steps for eco AI is to enhance the already existing community aspect of the project. Since this is a movement that improves the environment we want to focus more on making conserving water sharable and cool to encourage more people to want to be apart of the movement.
