Inspiration
We wanted to create a game that could be enjoyed by those with a sight disability. Games these days rely a lot on the graphics that mean nothing to those who struggle to see. This game allows these people experience a full game designed for them.
What it does
Ionized Radar using a 2D matrix to create an environment in which the player will have to use a Geiger counter to located and defuse nuclear bombs. We consistently calculate the distance between the player and the bomb, and play accurate audio representations of a Geiger counter moving to and from a nuclear source. This allows for a challenging yet fun gaming experience that can be enjoyed on a wider scale of audience.
How we built it
We built game using python. We used many different libraries such as pygame, pynput, ect. to create and traverse the environments made each time you load up the game. Upon loading the game, you will be in a newly generated matrix with randomized bomb placement. This allows for an ever-changing gaming experience.
Challenges we ran into
The most challenging part was calculating and corresponding the distance between the player and the bomb with the correct Geiger counter sound. We ended up using 10 variations of the Geiger counter in this game, along with many other sounds. This was are first time making a game with sound, and that made it an amazing challenge for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all very proud of how much we were able to make given that we had never implemented sound to code. While we were somewhat familiar with pygame, most of the libraries were brand new to us. We are very proud of our final product, and find it to be a very enjoyable gaming experience.
What we learned
The main thing we learned was how to implement sound into the game. We are very proud at how successful we were with adjusting and creating the audio for the game. We also became much more familiar with GitHub, which will be very useful for the future.
What's next for Echos & Locations
The next big step would be moving into the beta phase of the game. We have the plan to create a tutorial as well as a set of levels with incremental difficulty. We also want to add more lore in the form of audio lines as well as different types of bombs. We also would love to make it where multiple bombs can be active at once.
