Inspiration

EchoRoom started from a single question: "What if the hardest conversation of your week could also be the calmest?" We keep watching the same thing happen online: a stranger says something we disagree with, the algorithm rewards the loudest reply, and within minutes a conversation has become a performance for an audience that was never going to change its mind. Twitter and Reddit are optimized for engagement; nobody is optimizing for understanding. I wanted to build the opposite of a comment section — a quiet, anonymous, time-boxed room where two people who disagree are gently helped to actually hear each other.

What it does

EchoRoom is an anonymous, AI-mediated platform that pairs two strangers with opposing views on a topic for a 15-minute structured conversation designed to build understanding, not win arguments.

  • Anonymous onboarding — auto-generated handles ("Curious Otter"), illustrated avatars, an 8-question Conversational Style quiz that tags users as Listener / Challenger / Builder / Storyteller.
  • Topic library — ~30 curated topics with neutral framings and a 1–5 stance spectrum, plus a "Hot Topic of the Day."
  • Smart matchmaking — pairs you with someone whose stance is ≥2 points apart on the same topic, weighted by conversational-style compatibility.
  • The Room — real-time 1-on-1 chat with a visible 15-minute timer, typing indicators, reaction stickers (🤔 💡 ❤️ 🔄), and translation if the two users speak different languages.
  • Common Ground — Bridges users.
  • Steel-man button — generates a respectful 2-sentence summary of the other side's strongest argument.
  • Wrap-up ritual — when the timer ends, both users see a shared AI summary (agreements, differences, one beautiful thing each said), rate respect and mind-shift, and can save or publicly share consented Common Ground moments.
  • Common Ground Wall + Wall of Bridges — a public, anonymized feed of agreements and an animated globe visualizing live conversations as glowing arcs between continents.
  • Gamified humanity — badges (🦉 Patient Owl, 🌉 Bridge Builder, 🌱 Open Mind), daily challenges, a private Listening Score, and a streak that protects mental energy instead of farming it.

How we built it

Completely built with MeDo, Magics are just a prompt away!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A working 15-minute conversation flow end to end: match → chat → AI mediation → shared summary → ratings → consented public Common Ground.

What's next for EchoRoom

  • 🎙️ Voice Rooms — optional voice-only conversations with real-time AI transcription, bridge-moment overlays, and voice modulation for full anonymity.
  • 👥 Triads & Salons — 3-person rooms and scheduled 6-person moderated salons.
