Inspiration
We started with one simple question: How can we make caregiving easier, wiser, and happier for every family? Through the REAP (Rural Education Action Program) challenge, we saw how caregivers of 0–3-year-olds — mostly mothers and grandparents — are doing their best under heavy pressure. They love deeply but often feel lost between conflicting advice, information overload, and generational disagreements. This gap between care and confidence inspired us to create 萌伴 EchoNest — an AI companion that offers empathy, not just answers.
What it does
萌伴 EchoNest is an AI-powered caregiving companion designed for parents and grandparents of 0–3-year-old children. It has two core experiences that work together to support both the child’s development and the caregiver’s well-being:
- Daily Care Tracking & Insights
Caregivers can record their baby’s everyday routines — feeding, sleep, diaper changes, play, and learning activities — all in one place. EchoNest then visualizes progress over time, shares milestone summaries, and generates AI-driven insights such as feeding trends, sleep consistency, or learning progress. These records can be shared across family members, creating a connected caregiving experience.
- Conversational AI Chatbox
EchoNest also offers a warm, intelligent chat companion that caregivers can talk to anytime. Through natural conversation, the AI provides personalized parenting tips, recommends relevant short lessons from 千天养育, checks in on the caregiver’s emotional health, and even celebrates small parenting wins. It’s not just a tool — it’s a friend who listens, guides, and encourages.
Together, these two experiences make caregiving simpler, more informed, and more human — helping both children and caregivers grow with confidence and joy.
How we built it
We built a prototype using Figma for natural, empathetic dialogue and designed a low-friction chat interface optimized for caregivers with limited tech literacy. We designed:
- A responsive chatbox that adapts tone and content to each child’s age data.
- Integration mockups for WeChat and partner apps.
- A dashboard and progress system for milestones and shared family insights.
- Our design and UX were informed by REAP’s existing caregiver curriculum and user interviews with parents who have 0-3 year-old kids
Challenges we ran into
- Designing for low digital literacy while maintaining the warmth and fluidity of AI interaction.
- Creating a chatbot tone that feels human and culturally sensitive, not robotic or overly clinical.
- Balancing AI personalization with data privacy and offline accessibility.
- Aligning diverse caregiver needs (mothers vs. grandparents) within one conversational flow.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built an end-to-end AI caregiving prototype that integrates learning, emotional support, and family connection.
- Designed a localized conversational UX in Chinese that’s simple, empathetic, and context-aware.
- Formed cross-disciplinary collaboration between PMs, designers, and developers within 48 hours.
- Received encouraging feedback from mentors on EchoNest’s potential to extend REAP’s real-world impact.
What we learned
- Empathy is a design principle. Building for caregivers taught us that warmth and simplicity matter more than complexity.
- Real social impact happens when technology fits into daily life, not when it replaces it.
- Working with REAP mentors showed us the power of grounding innovation in real human stories.
What's next for 萌伴EchoNest
Next, we plan to move from concept to working product, focusing on three priorities:
- Build a functional prototype: Develop the backend and conversational engine using real LLM APIs, enabling live AI interaction and data input. We’ll begin small-scale usability testing with caregivers from REAP program.
- Refine the AI knowledge base: Integrate and structure curriculum content from 千天养育 to create more accurate, culturally sensitive, and developmentally aligned responses. Our goal is to ensure the AI speaks with warmth and authority, rooted in trusted parenting science.
- Expand integrations and use cases: Collaborate with NGO and educational partners to embed EchoNest into existing platforms — from WeChat mini programs to community health or daycare apps — so the tool can reach caregivers wherever they already are. Ultimately, we hope to turn EchoNest into a real, scalable companion that brings trusted guidance, emotional support, and connection to families across China.
