EchoForge: Industrial Edge Bridge
Elevator Pitch A lightweight MCP bridge that links Alexa+ with legacy offline tools, letting hands‑busy factory staff fetch local diagnostic data instantly—just by speaking.
📖 Project Story
Inspiration
While modern Voice AI has revolutionized consumer tasks like setting kitchen timers or playing music, industrial sectors face a massive, physical data bottleneck. In aerospace manufacturing and metrology, operators use Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) to inspect parts down to the micron. Their hands are wrapped in heavy nitrile gloves, and their eyes must remain fixed on fragile, $50,000 probes.
However, the legacy desktop software recording these measurements (e.g., PC‑DMIS) traps data in archaic, local *.DMO text files. To check a tolerance, operators must drop their tools, de‑glove, and walk to a laptop just to read a text file. We realized that this “hands‑busy, eyes‑busy” environment is the ultimate, untapped frontier for ambient voice computing.
What it does
EchoForge is an Industrial Edge‑to‑Voice Bridge. It empowers industrial operators to interact with legacy, offline desktop software using natural language via Alexa+.
Instead of walking across the shop floor to check a screen, a machinist simply says:
"Alexa, check the local system. Did the upper flange pass the 2‑micron tolerance limit?"
EchoForge securely reaches into the local laptop, parses the messy, offline *.DMO inspection file in real‑time, processes the coordinate deviation, and speaks the result back to the operator immediately. It transforms a standard Alexa into an industrial analytics tool.
How we built it
We architected EchoForge across four main pillars:
- Voice Interface: A custom Alexa Skill utilizing new Alexa+ routing capabilities to capture and transcribe natural‑language intents.
- Cloud Orchestrator: The intent is routed via AWS Lambda to AWS Bedrock AgentCore (powered by Claude 3.5 Sonnet), which reasons about what local data is required.
- MCP Edge Bridge: A local Python server implementing the Model Context Protocol (MCP) 2025‑11‑25+ (streamable HTTP) to act as the secure bridge.
- Local Execution: The MCP server watches the local hard drive for new
*.DMOfiles, parses the crypticFILNAM/blocks using Regex/BeautifulSoup, and returns a structured JSON‑RPC payload back to Bedrock for Voice synthesis.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was securely bridging the stateless cloud environment of AWS Bedrock with a local, offline file system. Implementing the exact MCP Streamable‑HTTP transport required deep dives into the protocol specifications. We had to ensure headers (Mcp‑Name, Mcp‑Method) correctly mirrored the JSON payload so that AWS API Gateway could route the request without expensive payload parsing. (Note: All of our friction points and solutions are documented in our attached Friction Log).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a multi‑million‑dollar‑level B2B solution without requiring any proprietary IoT hardware—just a Python script and standard protocols. By watching local file drops, EchoForge proves that cutting-edge Cloud AI can seamlessly integrate with isolated, 1990s-era desktop software.
What we learned
We learned that the Model Context Protocol (MCP) is not just for reading databases; it acts as the ultimate “universal remote.” It enables secure, remote execution of local diagnostic scripts, fundamentally shifting how Cloud LLMs can interact with on‑premise, legacy environments.
What's next for EchoForge
While our MVP targets aerospace metrology, the architecture is entirely agnostic. Our immediate next steps include:
- Healthcare Expansion: Adapting the MCP parser to read HL7 / CareXML files, allowing pathologists to dictate cancer‑staging reports directly into legacy hospital LIMS systems.
- Visual Integration: Adding a WebGL‑based 3D digital‑twin UI that visualizes tolerance breaches in real‑time alongside the voice feedback.
- Enterprise Deployment: Packaging the MCP edge bridge as a lightweight Docker container for frictionless on‑prem deployment across the automotive and oil & gas industries.
