Inspiration

Culture is widely preserved but rarely experienced in everyday life. Much of it sits in archives, disconnected from how people move through the world. Echo was inspired by the idea that culture should be encountered in context—at the places where it actually happened—so it can be felt, not just stored.

What it does

Echo brings culture into motion by attaching stories to real-world locations. As users move through a city, the app surfaces short, meaningful cultural stories tied to the exact places around them. It turns passive walking into active discovery, making culture immediate, local, and engaging.

How we built it

We built Echo using location-aware technology and simple, human-centered design. By combining curated cultural data with proximity detection, we deliver short stories at the right place and moment. The experience is designed to be lightweight, accessible, and easy to interact with in real time.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was connecting cultural preservation with real-time engagement. Location accuracy, avoiding repetitive triggers, and keeping the experience calm but impactful required careful balance. We also had to ensure cultural stories remained respectful, meaningful, and not reduced to surface-level information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a system that activates culture instead of just storing it. Echo successfully links memory to place, delivering stories in context and making them feel alive. We’re especially proud of building a simple but powerful experience that clearly demonstrates this idea in action.

What we learned

We learned that context changes everything—when stories are experienced in the places they belong, they become more meaningful and memorable. We also learned that simplicity is key; short, well-timed interactions are more impactful than dense information.

What's next for Echo

Next, we plan to expand the number of locations and stories, introduce personalization, and enable contributions from communities and cultural institutions. Our goal is to grow Echo into a living cultural layer that keeps stories visible as cities evolve.
