Inspiration
Africa is home to centuries of oral traditions, where proverbs are not just sayings but guiding principles for life. I wanted to capture that essence and reimagine it for the digital age, making ancient wisdom accessible and interactive through augmented reality.
What it does
The lens features a glowing spirit above the user’s head accompanied by African-inspired music. When you smile, a random African proverb appears on the screen, revealing timeless wisdom in a fun, expressive way. The frame is decorated with flags of African countries, symbolizing unity across cultures.

How I built it
- Created a glowing spirit visual positioned above the head.
- Added smile detection to trigger random proverbs.
- Used JavaScript scripting in Lens Studio to manage interactions and text updates.
- Designed a custom frame featuring African flags along the sides.
- Integrated African drum music to enhance the cultural atmosphere.
Challenges I ran into
-Voice ML was deprecated, so I had to redesign the main interaction from voice commands to smile detection.
- Getting the text to display neatly and scale correctly across devices took multiple script adjustments.
- Balancing visuals with performance was difficult.
- As my first time using Lens Studio, the learning curve was steep, especially for hand tracking and animation.
Accomplishments that I’m proud of
- Built a working lens that combines visual art, motion, and interaction.
- The spirit glow effect and responsive smile-triggered quotes.
- Created a culturally rich frame that celebrates Africa through symbols and music.
What I learned
- How to build and script in Lens Studio.
- How to use smile and face event triggers for interactivity.
- How to design AR visuals that blend art, culture, and technology.
What’s next for Echoes of Wisdom
-Make the spirit a 3D animated model. -Add ambient particle effects for atmosphere. -Reintroduce voice-based activation if future Lens Studio updates allow it. -Expand the proverb collection and possibly localize by region or language.
