Inspiration Echoes of the Shrine is a tale shaped by your decisions. Inspired by Japanese folklore and anime-style storytelling, it blends atmospheric visuals with branching, emotional choices. Every visit to the shrine becomes a unique path — a story that changes because you chose how to listen, speak, or act.

What it does This mobile‑friendly Horizon Worlds experience blends stylized environments, anime‑inspired character portraits, and interactive dialogue. Players explore a haunted shrine and encounter three distinct youkai spirits. Each choice they make alters the story, leading to a unique ending shaped by emotion and intuition.

How I built it I used the Meta Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor to design and script the entire experience.

  • Environment design: Built shrine spaces with modular 3D assets and atmospheric lighting.
  • Character presentation: Imported stylized portraits and integrated them into interactive flows.
  • UI/UX: Created splash screens, finish screens, and branching dialogue panels using Horizon’s scripting blocks.
  • Interaction logic: Used visual scripting to trigger events, choices, and outcomes without external engines.
  • Audio/immersion: Added ambient sound and lighting cues to guide player attention and mood.

Challenges I ran into

  • Balancing visual richness with mobile performance inside Horizon Worlds.
  • Refining imported art assets to fit the editor’s limitations.
  • Designing branching story logic with modular scripting blocks while keeping it intuitive for players.
  • Ensuring UI elements (splash, finish screens) felt polished and responsive in a 3D camera context.

Accomplishments I’m proud of I created a stylized experience that feels emotionally resonant and visually unique, all within Horizon Worlds’ Desktop Editor. The branching story system allows each player to uncover a different ending, making every playthrough personal

What I learned

  • How to blend 2D and 3D presentation inside Horizon Worlds.
  • How to guide player attention using sound, light, and UI overlays.
  • How to build emotional impact without complex animation, relying instead on composition and timing.
  • How to refine workflows for AI‑assisted art assets and adapt them to Horizon’s environment.

What’s next for Echoes of the Shrine I plan to expand the story with more spirits, deeper lore, and interactive rituals. Future updates will include voice acting, emotion‑variant portraits, and additional shrine scenes. I also aim to refine mobile performance and publish expanded builds for Meta Quest platforms.
