Inspiration
I was inspired by the stories that history often forgets — those of unsung heroes and marginalised voices. Noor Inayat Khan's courage and sacrifice resonated deeply with me, and I wanted to use storytelling and technology to honour her memory.
What it does
Echoes of the Past is an interactive website that narrates the life of Noor Inayat Khan — a British-Indian SOE spy in World War II — through a scroll-based, visually immersive storytelling experience. It brings historical facts, emotion, and digital design together to help users connect with the past personally.
How I built it
I built the frontend using React.js and Tailwind CSS to design a responsive, modern UI. The backend is powered by Python to handle content delivery and any future scalability. I used a component-driven approach and ensured that the design remained clean, accessible, and focused on the narrative.
Features
- Chapters of History – The story is split into scrollable, immersive sections for easier navigation and emotional impact.
- Interactive Timeline – Key events visualised chronologically to help users grasp the historical context.
- Historical Artefacts Gallery – Digitally curated photos, letters, and documents that add realism and authenticity.
- Retro Newspaper UI – Designed with a vintage 80s–90s newspaper aesthetic to enhance the storytelling atmosphere.
- Mini Quiz – A short, engaging quiz to test users’ understanding of the story and reinforce learning.
- Historical Representation – The website highlights overlooked figures like Noor Inayat Khan, amplifying underrepresented voices in history.
Challenges I ran into
One major challenge was balancing storytelling with interactivity, making the story visually engaging without overwhelming the historical accuracy. Structuring long-form content into scroll-friendly sections and maintaining performance was also tricky.
What's next for Echoes of the Past
I plan to expand the platform to cover more untold stories from history, building a growing archive of digital memorials. I’m also looking into adding voiceovers, animations, and multilingual support to make the experience more accessible and engaging.
