Inspiration
History is full of voices that were silenced, stories that were never told, and warriors who never made the textbooks. We were inspired to spotlight one such story: the fierce Dahomey Amazons—Africa's all-female military regiment that stood strong for over two centuries. Their courage, discipline, and defiance against colonial invasion struck a chord with us, especially as young creators seeking to amplify marginalized narratives. We wanted to craft a digital space that not only teaches history but lets you feel it.
What it does
"Echoes of the Forgotten War" is an interactive website that brings to life the untold story of the Dahomey Amazons. It combines storytelling, historical timelines, diary-style perspectives, and a dynamic map to immerse users in their journey—from training in Abomey to the final battle at Adegon. Visitors can explore a scrollable timeline, view historic battle locations, and read fictionalized journal entries based on real events.
How we built it
The site was built using React for dynamic interactivity. We used Leaflet.js to create the interactive map and Netlify to host the final product. Historical research was compiled from scholarly journals, archives, and Wikipedia for timeline and character depth. Design-wise, we used bold typography and rich earth-tone colors to evoke cultural heritage and intensity.
Challenges we ran into
- Finding accurate, reliable sources on precolonial African history took time.
- Striking the right tone between fiction and fact in the diary entries required sensitivity.
- Making the website mobile-responsive while retaining its visual storytelling was challenging.
- Syncing scroll-based animations with historical content involved trial and error.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a site that feels like walking through history, not just reading about it.
- Honoring the legacy of women warriors who have been left out of traditional narratives.
- Learning to merge design, storytelling, and code into one immersive experience.
What we learned
- How to structure and visualize historical content for the web.
- How to collaborate on a multidisciplinary project—history, design, development.
- How to create accessible, educational storytelling for a global audience.
What's next for Echoes of the Forgotten War
We hope to expand this into a full series that covers other untold African histories and powerful female figures across different cultures. We’re also considering adding voice narration and audio effects to deepen the immersion, along with classroom-ready learning resources.
