InspirationThe spark for Echoes of Orion came from a simple question: What if exploring deep space felt less like a video game and more like unearthing an ancient, fragile artifact?
Traditional VR sci-fi often leans heavily on high-octane action, heavy weapon controls, and room-scale movement. We wanted to move in the exact opposite direction—creating a quiet, deeply intimate, and contemplative moment. Drawing inspiration from classic audio dramas, tactile museum exhibits, and the sheer atmospheric wonder of deep-space photography, we set out to build an experience where the vastness of the cosmos is brought right down to a personal, tabletop scale. By stripping away controllers entirely, we wanted players to feel the visceral, tactile weight of history as they literally reach out and touch the starlight.
What it doesEngine & XR Integration: Developed in Unity using the Meta XR SDKs (v81+), leveraging the core hand-tracking pipelines to ensure zero latency between physical hand motion and virtual response.
Spatial Audio Architecture: Because sound is half the storytelling in a deep-space narrative, we integrated advanced spatial audio engines to position archival logs, hums, and sonic echoes precisely in 3D space around the user's head.
Interaction Design: We utilized custom pinch-and-pull gesture mechanics. Users interact with the experience by forming natural pinches to grab, rotate, and expand floating holographic fragments of data, keeping the cognitive load low and the immersion high.

Challenges we ran into Hand Occlusion & Tracking Stability: In tight, gesture-heavy interactions, hands can easily block each other from the headset's sensors. We solved this by designing graceful fallback states and keeping primary interaction zones directly in front of the user's chest and field of view.
Balancing Atmosphere and Clarity: Early playtests showed that if the cosmic visual effects were too dense, players couldn't find the interactive fragments. We had to carefully tune particle shaders and volumetric lighting to ensure the narrative focal points always popped cleanly against the background starlight.
